Crasher, check my thread from a few weeks back, I was lucky enough to have been able to save the heli.. Where do/did you have your on/off switch mounted? My problem was that it vibrated to OFF while I was flying, fortunately I had just switched to IDLE 1 on the ground..

That was with my X-Cell 60, i'm thinking the older X-Cells had a slight problem when you mount the on/off in certain places.. I'm willing to bet that this is what happened with yours.

Thats another reason to have the PCM throttle failsafe fucntion. No-one ever thinks they will LOOSE their helicopter, But what if you are like crasher? If you would have Had the PCM receiver with the throttle setup, you would'nt have "lost" it, at least in the sence that its completely Gone! I always setup my copters to do this, Even if its a cheapie.
Some people will say that its a stupid idea, "Well what if your doing something, and don't have time to recover", well then you would have lost it anyway, but harder. And you probably wouldn't have gotten control back anyway if it wern't for the engine going to idle. Most interferance (I find) is usually caused by, antanae's or engines (specifically the bearings around and in the engine).
I don't know if the other pcm reciever do this, but mine will even "tell" you before the battery dies. The Futaba 9 PCM seris reciever. It goes to "lockout mode" like 2 times, enough for you to notice, and you pull the stick down and up to regain control Thank god I only had to use it once.

I was once in the old Aeronautical Models shop in Parkway, Camden when some kids came in with a bent Kalt heli to sell. Turned out is was John Wallington's (who worked there at the time) and had gone free flight from the Scrubs.

The doors were quietly locked and the kids kept occupied until the law arrived. Of all the places to take it, they had to choose the one shop it was bound to be recognised in, didn't they!

Runaway copters

The same thing apparently happed at the Apollo field in Los Angeles a weekend or 2 ago. I was not there but RappyTappy got there just as it became a spec in the sky. It was gone and I have not heard if it turned up which I am almost sure it didn't.

That does make me wonder what becomes of it after it runs out of gas (assuming it doesn't "lawn dart" first). It sure would make a big hole in the ground! Scary!

If the switch would vibrate to the off position the reciever would not go to fail safe positions, it needs voltage to do that. A possibility would be a intermittant on/off situation in which the receive would be fooled in thinking it wasn't getting a good signal and then it might go to failsafe before it lost voltage as the switch vibrated off. In the case of the switch vibrating off failsafe is no benefit.
Years ago I have a Superior fly away twice, almost one year apart, because the switch( mounted in a Du-bro mount) was not fully in the on position and vibrated to the off position. I recovered it the first time 2 months later with only the blades (wood) to be replaced(warped because on rain, and clutch burnt up, it evidentaly got low on fuel , lost power on came down in some brush running, blades stopped ,clutch got hot and burnt. Second time ,recovered one week later, with no demage, except warped blades and some rusted bolts. Sold it later ,there wasn't going to be a third time.
