Now that I found a job, my wife has given me permission to get a new toy. I know I want to get a Hornet, but the question is FP or CP?

I have a Hawk 4 and am pretty confident in my tail-in hovering. I would like to go with a CP, but have heard that the balancing of the tail on this config is very difficult and the resonance of an unbalanced tail Will shake the thing apart.

I know I want to get a Hornet, so please just give me your advice on CP vs FP.

Thanks,
Paul

Go cp, however i would advise against a hornet they r bloody annoying to setup and r so fragile.

Would you fly a FP Hawk?

There is always an advantage having CP over FP.There is a guy here by the name of Brett that has a nicely setup Hornet for sale.Just remember they are NOT cheap.

Dont get a hornet. Trust me. To get it to fly right, you have to upgrade the hell out of it. ive had 2 cp hornets. trust me, you need cp upgrade, hacker motor(brusshless) esc with govenor, carbon blades, auto hub, MICRO (very small!) receiver....it has to be LIGHT, alloy main shaft, ALL metal swashplate, and some other things. Just what i listed is over 500 bucks.....thats no kit to. The kit is like 120, servos, what i listed, lipoly batterys(3 at least), good charger(nothing below 100....has to charge lipoly batts) is something around 1200 bucks!! trust me, DONT go cheap on the charger. You NEED the lipoly batterys...those are like 5 bucks a cell. But you only need 4 or 3. And you really want a couple packs. Trrust me. Get like a raptor 50v2 or something. It is fun to do autos in your house...but it gets boring chargeing you batterys. I would have one if i lived in oregon... but i dont. Neither do you. So trust me...get a nitro

O and by the way, if you do get one thats fp..its UNSTABLE. And you need the ball bearing tail pitch slider to....that comes with the cp upgrade though

The new kits are collective pitch to begin with. You don't have to buy any upgrades to get it. Many of the upgrades that used to be considered required are now part of the kit as well. The mainshaft is metal now, there is a duel ball bearing tail slider included. You get a mainshaft collar in the box. The boom now mounts with set screws on each end rather than being glued. For ten bucks you can get a ball slide to go in the swash plate that doesn't take long to install and is much lighter than a metal swash. Whether you need to go brushless or not depends on your flying skill in my opinion. If you are going to try and do 3D with the Hornet, then I think you will want the power of a brushless. If you are only learning to hover and do basic forward flight the stock motor is fine with 8 cell packs. I haven't tried seven cell batts but I know some use them. Brushless and lithium cells will give you longer flight times though.

New kits

Chris,

Where would be the best place to get the new kit to ensure this? Most of the places I have seen have a choice between CP and FP.

Thanks,

Paul,

I probably wasn't as clear as I could have been. In the past you had to purchase a FP kit and a CP upgrade to get there. Now there is a kit that builds CP without any upgrades. This is the kit I purchased and it included many of the upgrades that used to have to be ordered from a third party or done yourself. I assume they will not stop selling the FP kits so you will likely have to choose.

I've heard good things about Dreamhobbies although I've only ordered a battery pack from them myself. I can tell you it was shipped quickly and the price was right. Just make sure you are getting the CP kit and not a package with a FP kit and CP upgrade and you should be fine wherever you get it.

I tell people they are holding $750 when they are holding my Hornet. Mine flies reliably and is stable enough. It easily does loops, rolls, inverted. I would recommend waiting for the high discharge LiPoly batteries to be released in a month or so. The first couple of minutes with standard LiPolys has lively performance. Then it drops-off and you can fly around for a couple of more minutes. Build it lightweight. Get the credit card fired up. Upgrades I have:
JKs Delrin Speed up tail gears
GY240
Walt/JKs One-way Mod
Hacker 20-22
Phoenix-10 Speed Controller
LiPoly 1020s (3 in series), Charger available at homefly.com for $40 but you need to get about an 16-26V/18W power source.

If you wait for the high discharge LiPolys, you could probably use them with the stock motor and speed control and save yourself a couple of hundred bucks.

Keep it light. My AUW is 265grams. They aren't for everyone.

HTH,
Mike

As far as the new LiPolys and chargers: I was planning on getting the Triton from Great Planes (I think). Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Paul
