I made my first actual heli Save yesterday. The reason I say it like that is because I consider a "Save" to be a situation when Something Bad is about to happen, you realize it, consider your options and act in away that prevents a crash.

I've had lots of "Lucky Moments" when I just happened to jerk the stick the right way, but this was an honest-to-goodness Save. I've finally begun Fast Forward Flight, albiet with an instructor at my shoulder. He left early yesterday but I've gotten to the point where I can take off, fly around and land without any help. As long as I don't try to do anything too daring, I'm fine by myself. Well, it had been real cold the last few outings and I had leaned out my OS32SX-H accordingly. Yesterday it was very warm. 70F, if you can beleive it!! So I was flying around and the engine was losing power. I decided to go to full throttle and get the FF stopped so I can hover down. Well, I was already AT full power. D'Oh!

I knew it was overheating and if I didn't act fast, I'd be picking up debris. I was about 50 feet high and thought if I could unload the engine, it might pick back up before dying completely. So I pulled the throttle all the way back to idle, let the heli drop about 20 feet and then came back on the power. It worked! I got back into FF and brought it around for a safe landing. I richened it up a few clicks and hovered the rest of the tank. That was enough flying for me!!

Generally colder air is more dense and requires you to richen the mixture. When the air is warmer it usually has more moisture in it which displaces some of the air molecules which means there is less air molecules to burn so you would have to lean the mixture in a warmer more moisture laden environment. It's a little more complicated than that, but the term to describe it is called "density altitude".

M3

Do you own an M3?

What year?

I'm going to buy one this year. I have yet to figure out if a 60 size heli will fit in the trunk with the seats folded down. That won't stop me buying one... though.

Yes, I do. It's a '98 four-door (E36 model).

I know this is a helicopter forum and not a BMW forum, but he asked I can fit my 30 size heli, two field boxes and transmitter case in the trunk without folding the seats. If I fold them, I can still fit the heli plus a 40-size airplane (like a Tiger Stick). So I'm certain a 60-size heli will fit with room to spare, although you may have to lay it on its side.

If you're talking about the NEW M3 (E46), I don't know how much trunk room it has, but I'd guess it's similar and should be fine. A nickel's worth of free advice: Avoid an automatic transmission if possible. Besides the obvious reason that it ruins the whole point of the car, they are very fragile. A high-horsepower car like the M3 will chew it up in about 70,000 miles. Also, folding rear seats are an option. So don't just assume that they all have them. Check first before signing on the dotted line.

The E36 4 door is exactly what I'm going to buy. It absolutely has to be a standard.

Email me offline if you don't mind, just wondering what your experience has been and what pointers you might have when I make this purchase

Go with the Yugo, then you can have a fleet of HELI's

Yugo vs. fleet.

I have enough trouble keeping two helis flyable at the same time. Plus I want my fun days to be complete that means I want to enjoy my hour long drives to the flying field.
