| I made my first actual heli Save yesterday. The reason I say it like that is because I consider a "Save" to be a situation when Something Bad is about to happen, you realize it, consider your options and act in away that prevents a crash.
I've had lots of "Lucky Moments" when I just happened to jerk the stick the right way, but this was an honest-to-goodness Save. I've finally begun Fast Forward Flight, albiet with an instructor at my shoulder. He left early yesterday but I've gotten to the point where I can take off, fly around and land without any help. As long as I don't try to do anything too daring, I'm fine by myself. Well, it had been real cold the last few outings and I had leaned out my OS32SX-H accordingly. Yesterday it was very warm. 70F, if you can beleive it!! So I was flying around and the engine was losing power. I decided to go to full throttle and get the FF stopped so I can hover down. Well, I was already AT full power. D'Oh!
I knew it was overheating and if I didn't act fast, I'd be picking up debris. I was about 50 feet high and thought if I could unload the engine, it might pick back up before dying completely. So I pulled the throttle all the way back to idle, let the heli drop about 20 feet and then came back on the power. It worked! I got back into FF and brought it around for a safe landing. I richened it up a few clicks and hovered the rest of the tank. That was enough flying for me!!
