Autogyros - Gyrocopters > ROTORSHAPE ANYONE FLYING ONE?

it started last sunday night just looking around RR
and had a look at autogyros. allway wanted one but
thought they needed a runway. then i came a cross a
link an video of this thing, an the guy hand launched
it well that was it i ordered one there and then it
has been built, flown, crashed, flown and crashed
is there any cyclic control on these things or am
i pushing the sticks the wrong way it seems to take
off OK, then it seems to be scared of hight, the longer
the flight the less control i have is there a nack
to fly autogyros. or is it like my mate said

Hi,

A friend of mine has one and it is a delight to fly. It can be either handed launched or ROG.
Did you follow the instructions? is the CG in front of the rotor shaft? Is the rotor spinning at autorotation RPM when launched?
Have you got the right motor/battery combination? Are you launching it facing the wind?
In general terms it is adviced not to use "elevator" stick to lift, is much better to speed it up instead.

I suggest you not to hand launch the Rotorshape at first, is much better to use a runway and practise doing some hops, so that you can "feel" the Rotorshape behaviour.

When you say "the longer the flight the less control I have" what do you mean? Could you explain in detail what are the control issues?

And, yes they are ment to fly

the answer to most is yes. i have to hand launch there is
no runway at our field, and the take off is not the problem
it take off great just tilt it back build up head speed and
away it go's
the problem start when i try turning.to the left is fine
but to the right it just will not tilt that way, on the ground
it has loads of movement but in the air:mad
while flying it around i saw it was leaning to the left
so i tried to level it up, put in opposite stick and
nothing happened, so i tried moving the stick the other
way to see if i still had some control i did.
i was wondering if the servo were wimping out under load
so i put a finger on them and pressed while moving the
servo but they seem good.
so i think it must be me, i fly helis/plane even those
flying/boats/car things
so i think it's a stick pushing problem
or have i missed something?

apparenlty if you have the incidences wrong on the blades it wants to roll over all the time. I have a different autogyro and usually it flies great but after a recent incident where I had to replace the blades I got the angles wrong and it kept rolling inverted. Also you have to use the throttle a great deal more than you do with a fixed wing, basically full power at take-off then back to half throttle or there abouts. Use throttle as well as elevator to control height, don't try to fly too fast. Remember-they don't stall as such so you can have a high angle of attack with the fuselage (nose high) and it will still fly well. What motor and prop do you have? You may need to change the prop to one that causes less torque on the fuselage.

the motor i have used is the axi 22 08 34 thatis a
bit heavy at 45g(suggested about 30g)the lipos are
a bit lite so i still had to add lead 20g the prop
is a 7x5. i like what you say about using the throttle
more rather than full bore all the time like i do on
the planes. yes i get that.
the other thing i was thinking about was side thrust.
if it were a plane and it pulled to the left, or was not
keen to turn to the right, i would put a bit of side
thrust in it. what do you think?

A bit of side thrust wouldn't hurt. I'm not familiar with this model but do you have plans or is it a kit? Is the battery in the centre or on one side of the fuselage (i.e. left side)? As well as longways CofG you need cross ways CofG too. Have you got a link to the kit or a picture of your one?
Thanks
Denis
PS I wasn't having a go about full throttle on planes

thats how you fly planks isn't it right hand to steer
left to hold your cup o tea
it's full name is ( L A heli rotorshape ) if you google it
they will come, in the uk i got mine from robotbirds.
the lipos are centred infront of the CofG it's small
lite and very strange looking wirligig, but i have stuffed
it from a great hight an it just went back to kit form
a bit of epoxy an it will be up and running again
i will put a bit of side thrust on and try to let off
the throttle a bit but not too much.

Hi,

Why don't you e-mail the manufacturer?, nobody but he, will anwer better to your flying problems.
Just another question, are the blades flapping freely, I mean, can them go upright easily just like an hinge? (90º upward)

Kind regards,

i have found the problem it was just C of G
i had to balance it on the edge of a ruler, an
found it was tail heavy so a little lead (20g)
on the nose and it flies great i still don't
understand why it wouldn't go right, but it does
now, so i don't care .
