Radio - JR & Spektrum DSM > Simple Spektrum Balance Solution

I purchased a DX6 shortly after they were released, then modified a JR2601 to use the Spektrum RF board and have recently purchased a new DX7.

Like others I am more than a little dispointed that Spektrum continue to release the radio's with the stock JR net strap mount in the middle of the radio. This is really dangerious as the radio can easily rotate towards one's belly if let go off such that the throttle stick will most likely be applied by accident as I fond out to great expense when my Align TRex helicopter tried to chop my hand off with the main rotor blades, that was back with the original DX6.

The simplest fix is to open the case up, remove the RF board, then the main on/off switch board beneath that.

Next unscrew the next strap from the front of the radio and replace it with a 4mm v 8mm hex head screw.

Next drill a 4mm clearance hole through the front face of radio in the raised chrome section just below the power switch.

Using a small flat file, gently file off the centre part of the raised word "Power".

Install the neck strap bolt into this new hole and install a 4mm nut from behind. it may help to super glue the nut to the end of a screwdriver blade or similar and tighten.

Re-install switch board (3 screws) and re-install RF board (4 screws) and your done.

With the neck strap in this position the radio now hangs horizontal and is much more comfortable and safe to use.

See my photo of both my JR & DX7 modified this way and I have also done the mod for others, takes about 10 minutes all up,

Enjoy

I don't think you've linked to the right picture, all I get is a camera in a block of foam!

is there enough "meat"

in that location? I have not taken the radio apart yet... but what kind of support is in the stock location as compared to the new location... we are not just going to pull the bolt through the case in time are we?

While I haven't specifically measured the thickness at that location I going to guess its about the same as it is in the standard location.

If you were really worried you could add a washer inside to spread the load over a wider area but I don't think it necessary.

The first radio's I have modded this way have now been in regular use for about 14 months now so I don't think it's a problem.

MachineGun,

My first attempt at fixing the balance problem when I bought my orginal DX6 was basically the same as yours, I used a 1/4 dia "eye" bolt and two nuts from the local hardware store but that method has a couple of problems, one it protrudes somewhat over the on/off power switch and two, it's easily bumped left or right causing the neck strap eye to become loose as it unscrews itself from the radio.

I simply pointed out my method as it's simple and quick for anyone who's not afraid to open their radio and do a bit of modding.

I'm sure in time both Spektrum and now JR will eventually address this issue with a design change to the case, in the mean time I love the whole 2.4GHz technology because for electric helicopters at least, it solves so many problems with glithes and stuff. In over of year of use I have not had a single glitch with my Align Trex birds while others just go on and on about the troubles they have with FM & PCM radios.

I turn up, turn on and fly, it's that simple, what more can a man want.

I'll get to try my DX7 for the 1st time tomorrow, if i'm uncomfortable with it's balance, i'll do your mod. Cheers.

I just took mine apart...

There is quite a bit less material at that location.. it may be enough to hold... but at the stock location the bolt goes through the siver case as well as the black plastic on the inside...easily twice as thick.

Not saying it wont work.. just my observation about how much plastic is there.

What can I say, the JR2610 you see in the photo was modified about 13 months ago and was in almost daily use (weather permitting) until I purchased the DX7 3 weeks ago and has taken more than its fair share of knocks and is still holding up well.

So I don't thik there is any cause for concern that my mods works. I know of at least 7 radios modified this way to date.

I got to fly with my DX7 1st time yesterday and found for me that it wasn't so much the balance that was odd, but the lack inertia from the aerial. The DX7 aerial is so light that the Tx doesnt have the rotational moment, and, coupled with it being bottom heavy, I might try ADDING weight to the handle instead.

The mod works great! Its not like your constantly tugging on the TX or dropping it and jerking it all the time. It levels the TX out much nicer than factory.
Thanks again Corona44

I saw a DX7 with the same mod, but instead of the bolt in the original location, a green LED was added. It looked like it came from the factory that way, and I'm pretty sure the LED doesn't draw much power

Better to have tried and failed than to never have tried at all!!

That's interesting Sign Guy, maybe Spektrum is going to fix the problem. On the current radios, a screw has to be inserted in that location to replace the original strap holder as the screw holds a brass spacer on the inside that is part of the support for the power switch board.

I had actually thought of adding a flashing Red LED to my radio as I sometimes forget to turn it off, especially if I am making adjustments to the rotor head of my Trex.

If you just connect your strap to the lower hole you drilled, then i dont think you'll need the big weight.

Have you tried that?
