I haven't flown my heli in about 5 weeks and the weather was warm about 55 deg and breezy. I had it in a low hover and it was running great then all of a sudden it was like the blades reversed and it went down so fast and slammed the ground. I was very lucky that I was only 2ft off the ground. I shut it down looked it over and started it up again and it ran just fine like with out any trouble. I have a tt36 in my Raptor 30 and it has been a real sweet runner except for the carb screw that holds in the throttle barrel. It came out on the first flight. What do you think might have happened? Thanks Rick

same thing happened to me twice... both times engine got too hot.

In one case it was a very hot summer day... the engine had at least a couple of galons though, yet I was still learning hovering.

The second one was a couple of weeks ago when I fitted a new OS50 on my Raptor. After a few tanks of hover I decided to fly a few circuits. After a couple of minutes the engine quit in flight. I brought it down safe... (don't ask how - my firsy auto) and I saw smoke all around the engine.

Glow engines (especially ABC) are very sensitive to heat.

hit the ground

What would make the heli go in the opposite direction? It was like someone had a rope tied to it and yanked it down hard.

although there's atleast a hundred reasons why you could get a hit but this reminds me of a hit i had on my x-cell gasser last october. as it turns out the servo wire for the rudder was rubbing on the clutch bell and shorted out sending in into a purpetual spin causing a pucker factor of 10.

I had the (ELECTRICAL SHORT) Problem once, The charge jack which I usually tuck under the reciever rubber bands got loose and the plastic connector got up against the muffler, melted, shorted. luckly the violent manuver it did all by it's self threw the conector off the muffer, I recovered it about 5 feet of the ground. very high pucker factor.

I had that happen to me once. It happened right after I made some adjustments to the pitch servo horn. Was hovering at about 30' when all off a sudden it made a bee line for the ground and burried itself. Turns out I had neglected to tighten the servo horn screw. Oops. Amazing how fast those suckers drop with -12deg of pitch.

Hit the groung

I have no idea what happened to you but my good friend and fellow pilot (oldoldheliman)(did i mention old)always tells me that altitude is your friend. It does seem that for me, most times that something goes wrong it happens close to the ground when there's no time to react.

Hit the ground?

Since you were so close to the ground-did you get a sudden breeze? 2 ft. is not much and a bit of wind can knock you down that far pretty quick. ---------BladeRunner.

No breeze, The engine went to a much higher RPM instantly then down it went slamming hard. NO time to react.

Check you antenna

A while back I was getting some weird glitches on one of my planks. I traced it to the antenna. It's run inside the fuselage on this plane and exits at the rear with about 6 inches dangling behind the plane. The actual antenna wire was about 1/32 inch longer than the plastic insulation and would brush against the metal tailwheel bracket. Every time they touched, the radio would glitch. I fixed it by putting a small piece of heat shrink tubing over the end of the antenna and putting a drop of thin CA on it. In effect, I simply lengthened the insulation.

That was over a year ago and I've been glitch-free ever since.

What servos are you running? I had Hitec 425's in my bird until two of them failed within the same week. They were only a few months old and low hours. I took them out and put 537's in it. Then the next week, another guy I know who had 425's had one fail in his tail. He could have lost it but an experienced pilot was check flying it when it happened.

Banging the ground

I dont know what causes it but its going around. Same thing happened to a friend of mine last weekend. He's hovering at two to three feet and bang the raptor is sitting on the ground. He lifted off again and a repeat performance. I told him that it was time for remeadial landing lessions and we quit fllying. That wasn't his only problem though, we were trying to find a tail glitch when this all happened. If we find a good answer ill report it.
