Last weekend I tryed to fly FAI with my Vibe.
I used Radix 710 mm 185 gr mains, BH ratio 0.7, 480mm flybar with JR FAI paddles without lead + 10 gr weights.
I've liked it.
It keeps position in hovering very well
BUT.
It's jumpy in gusty conditions.
very match.
What should I do?
maybe shorter and not so wide blades?
or 300-400 gramms of load ...

Radix comes in FAI version I believe. Maybe should try those.

All hellies will bounce in windy conditions,

The key is to be quick on the collective and power, you could always drop your head speed, i fly at around 1500RPm for the hovering manouvers

Hi Guys,

My advice is to go right to the source for that machine and drop Curtis a line and ask him what to run to get the maximum performance out of that machine for F3C type flying.

Guys,

For FAI on the Vibe I am running the Radix FAI (205g) blades and the standard Stubz paddles (YB-P484). I have heard from other pilots that the Radix blades can be "jumpy" in windy conditions. But I find with the standard Stubz paddles the blades sit great even in windy conditions.

Please can you tell us..

1. What flybar ratio you are using?
ie What holes on flybar seesaw and on mixing arms. (Airskipper/SG head)
2. What length flybar and what weights?
3. Are you using the centre teeter?

I have just ordered a set of radix FAI blades and have a set of stubs lying around
I am looking at copying a vibe head setup (that works) without too much modification.

Rick's (top service!)

Delivered two weeks ago however have not had a chance to try them yet as was on holiday in SA and only got back yesterday.

Will try on Friday, two days before first comp! hence the reason i am looking for a "default" working setup that works on a SG (vibe) head.

Hello Guys,

1.) I am using about 0.7 to 1 flybar ratio
2.) Stubz paddles with Stubz weights about half way out
3.) 500mm long flybar
4.) cyclic pitch +-9
5.) expo- none in hovering, about 20% in aerobatics
6.) Pitch +-9 hovering , +-12 aerobatics.
7.) I use trailing edge control on the blade grips on the standard JR Vibe arrangement. Because this is more stable. I use leading edge for 3D because it is more aggressive.

Hope this helps,

Curtis

Thank you very much for this info.

Still got a LOT of work on setup but initial impressions of the FAI Radix blades are good.
Mark Christy threw a spanner in the works this weekend at the first comp of the season. He flew standard JR vigor head with Radix 690's and can honestly say I have never seen a machine so locked in a hover.

He also won, so well done Mark!

Curtis please could you tell me if you are using the standard Vibe head (yoke size)for FAI or a modified one?
i.e. The same size yoke as the standard plastic provided in the Vigor kit?

thanks for all your assistance.

Guys,

For those that are interested this is the setup I have settled on. However please remember that what works for one person won't necessarily work for another...

The standard Vibe head has a very short hub and O-ring damping system with no centre teeter point. Whilst this no doubt works great in 3D I found my Vibe incredibly hard work in the hover when it was windy (Which seems to be the problem most are having here...)

I believe the main reason for this is a lack of damping over a suitably large area. Therefore I swapped the metal vibe hub back to the original wide plastic hub (Which also has a centre teeter point). This along with the original Vigor CS dampers gave a much more settled model in the hover.

I am running Hirobo Freya paddles with all the weights on the standard flybar along with the 0.75 to 1 mixing ratio.

This gives a nice balance to me.. however somebody else may fly it and hate it.. either way for me it was much easier to hover in the wind with this setup and nearly all the "jumpyness" had vanished.

As John said this was with the standard "light" Radix 690 rotor blades.

P.s. Before these mods I tried lots of different blades and non were any better than the others in the hover on the Vibe. The above head changes are what made the difference.

Cheers

Mark

Thanks Mark

quick question, Do you run the stock venture 90 dampers with the one piece metal spacer/insert. (the ones that you can't shim.)

and if yes what duro dampers (rubber blocks) are you running. Just so I can order a set to try

Hi John,

To answer these questions and your PM questions.

1) The shimming is as per the manual..stock.

2) Venture 90 rotor head. This will not have the centre teeter point in. You can make your own with an o ring around the centre of the spindle and some electrical tape to hold/compress it. Or you can order the plastic sleeve of the Vigor.

3) The dampers are the stock Venture 90/Vigor CS dampers.. no idea what hardness they are!

4) You can run a much lower headspeed with this setup as there is more natural damping. I could only get my Vibe to sit in the hover with about 1750RPM on the head. Now with the above setup I am down to 1650 and could probably go lower.

5) Even with the softer head my Vibe is not pitchy in forward flight. But then this is something that has never affected the Vigor/Vibe rotor head like some others.

6) Setup. Hover: 25% expo 60% rates. Aeros: 20% expo 90% rates.
(These are from memory and may have changed +/-5% either way!)

Cheers

Mark

Hi Guys

I am still playing with the Vibe head(SG head) and Radix blades.

I personally find the Radix FAI blades work better with a higher flybar ratio and heavier flybar setup (1500 Head speed.)
With the current setup I do find the whole machine sort of "heavy" throughout the airos.
To be honest, after owning a Avant and playing with the programmable head, I am looking to go with a lighter setup. (Radix 690s)and possibly try the old Airskipper/venture/Viger head.

Please could you tell me what holes you guys are using on your mixing arms (Short side connected to the head?)
The airskipper manual says FAI inner (closer to head) and 3D outer?

Thank for all your time and assistance?
