Beginners Corner > First real hover attempt and first crash. ..Oooops :)

Well I took the Ergo out to a soccer field today for my first real hover attempt. Things started off pretty good for the first 1/4 tank. Just the typical beginners mistakes. Over sticking, bringing it down to fast resulting in some harder landings, hovering too high and other general beginners errors. It wasn't pretty but it got better after
I got abit more comfortable. I think it was running abit lean because after it warmed up it would tend to quit on me so I richened the low idle screw abit and ran much better. It did seem to develop abit of a oscillating shake though later on. Might have been because of the training gear but I will have to double check the blades to make sure they are both on the same pitch. Tracking looks good though. There was abit of wind that seemed to gust every once in awhile which made things abit harder to control. About after a half tank of hover-hoping, as I like to call it.
It finally happened. I was hovering at about 2 feet, well a moving hover, and I was bringing it down to land but I must have givin it some backward elevator because it came down abit too fast hit the tail fin first which broke a piece off and tail baldes struck the grass. The damage endend being a bent tail output shaft, broken vertical tail fin and broken tail gear case. Not that bad but could have been worse. It is alot different hovering the real thing then it is in the sim but more satisfying. I can't wait till I get this thing repaired and try again.

Good discription..... The shake could be the blades are too loose should be tight enough to stay in place when you lay the machine on it's side. "Grass" in Jan. There must be something to this "Global warming" thing

Hover?

Sorry to hear about your minor mishap. It's all part of the process
What type of training gear are you using? I used the hula-hoop and it saved me many times.
Doug; Ca-Na-Da----over 50 Deg. today and sunny You would think we are at the middle of April !!! Ya-hoo! -------BladeRunner.

Blades Too Loose

I think your might be right Doug. The blades might have been abit too loose. So far everything else checks out ok. Nothing was loose. I did however discover when I pulled the tail gear case apart that the tail output shaft has some wear or burn marks on it where the bearings fit. I put the bearings back on the shaft to check for play between the bearing and shaft. There is some play which tells me the bearings don't have a nice snug fit to the shaft. The shaft diameter must be abit undersize causing the bearings to turn abit on the shaft rather than the bearing themself turning. Thing I will contact Horizon tomorrow about this. Maybe I can get a new shaft under warranty. I also discovered that tail center hub was slightly bent. I'm not sure if I can still use this part. Anyone? The tail fins pivot on this shaft only about 90 degrees so I don't know if a little bend will affect it. I think I will also look into making my own aluminum tail gear case assembly. In my opinion JR want way too much money to buy it.

BladeRunner I'm using a set o Heli-Max training gear ( 4 rods with wiffle balls) that Heli_Gal gave me.
A couple of the FG rods had cracks in them but worked fine until
one of them broke in half today. I think I will replace all the rods with 3/8 dowel but I am also going to build one of the hoola-hoop training gears. I read in another topic the instructions you had on how to build it. Let ya know how it works.

Hover?

Hey Beezer, I have never used that type of gear, but, I have heard from others that it can catch on things-like grass that may not be cut short enough. The hoop can go any direction on just about any surface, seems to last forever as well. -----------BladeRunner.

7/16 dowels

Hey Beezer,
I have the Heli-Max training gear too. When my rod's started breaking I went to the hardware store and got 7/16 dowels. I drilled out the existing holes in the connecting block with the same size drill bit and used wood glue to hold the dowels in. I also drilled out the wiffle balls and screwed them to the ends of the dowels. Their bullet proof now! Believe me, I put them to the test and I can't break 'em. Just thought you might want to try a little bigger dowel, they didn't seem to add too much more weight.

some suggestions that helped me when i first started flying:

1. i had an experienced pilot take it up for the first time after a complete ground check of the machine. This was well worth it.
2. i flew my first gallon or two with a decent amount of expo and dual rate was around 70% to limit the effect of my over controlling the heli.

I too used a hula-hoop during training and had better sucess than the pole style.

Good luck

First Crash

Sorry to hear about your first crash. I also used 4 wiffle balls and 7/16 dowls. I also used a hula hoop and it worked great. Make sure that the pitch curve is correct. 0 degrees at low throttle and 5 at so you don't have any negative to slam the chopper towards the ground. Don't give up cause you now have learned more than you think

Thanks All...

Thanks for the encouragement and your helpful tips everyone. I'm not discouraged at all. In fact I'm more determined now to get my baby all fixed up by the weekend and weather permitting be back out there again. I ordered all my replacement parts today so should be back up and running soon. Guess I better log some more time on Real Flight.
I believe if the bottom of the tail fin hadn't broken off the tail blades wouldn't have hit the ground so I'm going to use some aluminum to repair the fin and adding some durability at the same time. Going to build my own aluminum tail gear case like JR's also. Already started on some CAD drawings.

what goes up must come must come down, i remember I read this somewhere in this forum. You are pretty lucky compared to me, when I first started out, I had no one to help me, the training gear that I bought gave me a very serious shake and in the end broke the landing gear(in less than half a min after I got the thing on), so I learned without training gear , I crashed three times for the first gallon, second gallon twice and over 10 tail pitch control fork, by the third gallon you will be able to hover at around 5 metres high, so in time of mistake you will mostly be able to bail out.

whiffle balls what good are they?

During my first few flights last year i would bring my heli off the ground and slowly the shakes got worse till i had to bring it down. so i took off the whiffle balls and it has never flown so well after that. the air beats down on the balls and starts the shakes dont ask why but it worked.

Hover/crash?

Hey Beezer, that's great that you can make your own parts, keep in mind you are adding a LOT of weight at the very end of your machine. Just be sure to carefully balance after your done. The same thing applies when you dump the training gear.

Yeah I noticed that Blade when I put the fin on. Had to take it off and use much thinner aluminum. Just got some G10 fins so will put those on after I get abit more hover practise.
