Let's say Chapter 3

Hi Guys and Gals, well it is time for some more updates on the TSK conversion. We will call this part of the story, Chapter 3.
After looking at 5 or 6 different motors I finally decided on the Century Lighting 600 Plus. It should give me from 1800 to 2000 headspeed with an 8 tooth pinion.

OK, next I laid out the motor mounting bolt pattern on the motor mount and starting drilling, sanding, and filing and finally I had my new motor mount.
As you can see I drilled 4 hoels for mounting the motor and then I slotted them for pinion to main gear clearence. I also drilled 4 air holes to help the motor cooling.

Next the plate was recessed at one of the cooling holes to allow for the 3 wires from the motor to pass between the mount and the motor. The mount was then attached to the motor.

This photo is the front and rear top frames bolted together. The small area under the main gear is where the motor mount will attach to the frame.

Now the motor and mount are attached to the frame.

Two more views of the motor and mount, all in all everything worked out great. Now I can start putting her back together.

I have a question, when I was mounting the motor and mount combination to the frame I noticed that the motor case could be pulled off of the rotor and shaft about .250 inch, is this the norm?? I would guess that the pinion will hold it together, right, wrong??????

Looking good!

ya made that mount with hand tools? Nice job!

The pinion shouldnt in anyway hold the motor can vertical play. As ya send current through motor and it spins up, the forces eliminate any play that remains.

Hi Shadowfox,
Good, I was worried that the motor might be defective. And thanks for the "good Job" more pic's to come as this TSK goes back together.
Hey Shadowfox do you think I should limit my posts on this forum? I don't want to take up too much space and get in trouble. This forum is great and you guys are very helpful. It's like having the best heli minds in the world right at my finger tips. Sometimes I feel like I'm asking too many questions. Thanks Again.

Chapter 4

Everything is laid out so the rebuilding can start.

Here the left and right top frame are ready to go together. The rear rotor servo must be installed in the left frame before it goes together.

With the top frame together, the tail boom and belt drive are installed. Take note to the square, I try to make sure everything is in line and square before I add the thread locker and thighten the screws.

Top view looking down into the rear drive belt.

The main shaft and main gear are installed next. Picture is poor.

Now the front frame is attached and the bottom frame is attached.

Now the new motor mount can be seen from the side and the bottom. I was worried about the strength of the frame when I cut some away to allow for the new mount, no need, the frame is more rigid then before.

The aluminum battery tray is installed and connected to the front and bottom frames.

The landing skids are added and it now looks like a heli again.

I will post some more pictures in a day or so of the main rotor head, the linkage does not look correct. I followed the pic's in the building manual, but it does not look right.

Here are the pic's of the linkage for the rotor head.

If you look at the TSK letters on the head, the linkage that is blocking part of the S is the one that I'm talking about.

?

Hi Shadowfox,

I don't know yet, I'm thinking about the 123's instead of the lipo's, what do you think? The motor says no more than 22.2 volts.
By the way this heli is built stronger then 95% of the other heli's that I have touched or looked at. I just purcheasd another My Star 30 and it is a little different, the top and front frames are carbon fiber??? I don't think that is a stock item.

To hot to work?

Hello Everyone, this is just a short note to let you know I'm still here. It has been way to hot to work in my shop even with the fans running. Cooler weather is here and I'm ready to mount the Gyro and install the motor connectors. Hang in there I will be back with pic's.

By the way I just purchased another TSK My Star 30 with nitro engine that I'm going to leave in the heli. Get ready for a lot of questions cause I never flew a nitro heli and I will need help.

Stay cool,

Chapter 5

Hello All,

Well it cooled off and I started building again.

Just behind the main rotor there are two small angles attached to the heli frame. I placed two pc's of foam tape on the angles and then a small pc of carbon fiber on top of the tape, Then I placed foam tape on the carbon fiber and attached the gyro. Man this 3M tape is super, I could pick up the complete heli by just grabbing the gyro. But I added a ty-rap just to be safe.

OK now comes the motor connectors, with the motor installed and each wire pointing downward, I made sure each wire was already tinned and then I placed a single male connector between the jaws of a needle nose pliers with a rubber band around the handles of the pliers. This held the connector well so I could fill the wire end of the connector with soldier. I then lifted the pliers up to the wire and reheated the connector and the wire slid into the connector. Then I did the other two wires.

Now I installed the shrink wrap and that job is finished.

OK now where can I mount the ESC at? I think it looks beter in a vertical position. But, maybe it should be in a horizonal position Hmmm? I have to think about this.

In the mean time I just placed the canopy on the heli so I could see what she will look like when she is complete. OK, looks OK not to bad.

See ya all next Chapter when I fiqure out where the ESC and the RX will go.

I meant to jump in here earlier

Motor wires: I have about the same motor as you water a Z30A-800 adn a good tip I heard (after I already put my motor to bed deep in my shuttle) make sure the motor can edges/or motor mount cant cut through the 3 wire insulations shorting on the motor. Next time I drop my motor I deff will do this.

Shirnk wrap those bullet connectors once ya get the correct motor rotation.

ESC: make sure ya can get to it in case of a fire and dont cover the heat sink.

Gyro: is there a way to bolt the flat plate to the frame?

Great job Water!

Chapter 6

Hello All, well when I stopped last time I was placing the ESC and the BEC. Well I did not like any of the places I could put it, so I will make some changes.

The first picture shows that I have removed the front two black supports. The supports were removed from the area directly behind the red T Handle in the pic, the supports are laying on the trun table. The second picture show what a 1/2" wide pc of alum would look like. No, I don't like it.

OK, how about some alum perf sheets, ahh! this might be the answer. The perf will be very lite and the holes will give me a ton of places to mount anything.

OK, I cut two pcs of perf the correct length and added 1/2" to the width for a hem. I placed the perf between two pcs of heavy alum and c-clamped them together.

I slowly formed the alum perf into a 90 degree and then I tapped the 90 degee into a flat hem. If you do this never flatten the alum hem from one end to the other. You have to jump around and turn the pc over and tap the back side as well. If you go from one end to the other the alum will curl up.

OK, two pc's with the hem ready to be cut to fit the heli.

Both pc's were installed in and removed about 10 time each so they fit just right and did not jack or twist the heli frame and battery pan. Look at the third pic on the left, you can see the black cross member on top of the perf just in front of the motor. This will add to the rigidness of the perf and it will give me another mounting location.

OK, remove the perf again and clean it, file it, buff it a little.

The perf is installed, screws are loctited, and now it don't look as good as I thought it would. O-well let's keep going and see what happens.

Well the ESC and BEC can now be mounted a lot better then they were.
Next step I will mount the receiver and start to check the flybar and the main blades.
