I must thank all who have supplied info, material, and pic's to this new found forum. I just spend hours looking over all the conversion pic's. I have a whole bunch of new ideas for my own TSK My Star conversion. By the way I did not see any info on any My Star conversions, would anyone happen to know of any? I plan on taking pic's and will gladly post them when it is complete.
thanks to all,

Pic's

Here are some pic's of my TSK My Star 30 ready to start the electric conversion. I will install a motor mount on the drive end of the motor and mount it just below the brg block mount. I'm trying to find a pinion with 8 teeth and with an outside dia. of .420 so the pitch matches the main gear which is 77 teeth and 3.095 outside dia. Any gear wizards can chim right in if they take a notion to. I would like to find a nice motor with a 6 mm shaft if that is possible.

I posted pic's of the gears in hopes that someone may know where I can get a pinion gear to match the gear on the cluth bell.

You could contact Irwin at QWW. He could probably help you out with the pinion. Their website is www.quickheli.com

I'm now ready to purchase the electric motor for my TSK My Star. I'm not sure what to purchase, any help would be great. I just want to fly the heli no super stunt stuff. The main gear is 3.095 OD with 77 teeth and the pinion is .420 OD with 8 teeth. The gas motor was an OS 32SX-H, I don't know what type of RPM or power this gas motor puts out. With all that said I don't know where to go from here. The pinion is the top half of the clutch bell and has an ID of .215inch or 5.47mm, the pinion is heat treated steel. I can grind the ID to 6mm and purchase a motor with a 6mm shaft, but which motor will be a little stronger then I need? If I use the same ratio as a stock motor would I be running a safe rpm!!!

Please make a suggestion if you care to.

Conversion progress

The nitro engine servo mount was removed from the frame. This was a horizontal mount located directly below the two existing servos.

The servo mount removed.

Here the aluminum Lipo tray was fabricated.

The tray is installed to check fit.

Two brackets that were removed from the nitro fan shroud were used to support the front of the Lipo tray.

The aluminum blank that will be the motor mount and the location of the mount when installed. (Mount was not installed 100% so picture would show location.)

This picture shows the heli before the changes.
I will keep posting as progress continues.

Still designing

Hi Guys and Gals,

Well I'm still working on what motor to use???????? I don't want super duper stuff just a good flying heli. Head speed about 1500 to 1800??? I have two questions for you knowledgeable people, one, this heli came with an OS 32 gas motor, what would the normal RPM range be for a motor like this? If I can find that range and using the gear ratio with the main and pinion gears I should be able to determine what rpm motor I should be looking for. And second, the blades that came with the heli are 550mm wood blades, should I look for another type of blade or stay with the wood.

8s lipos or 10s1p A123 cells
CC 45 HV ESC

Im using this setup in my shuttle 30 conversion. I have to use the nitro clucth on my E motor cause its part of the tail pinion too. Its a Shuttle quirk.

Hi Ben, I guess I will start with a 6S or 8S LiPo,

Hi Shadowfox, thanks for the numbers, I will take a look at them.

10s A123 will cost ya about 100$ alot safer then lipo sacks

I don’t think that the gearing is correct for that combination – perhaps a 6s or 7s LiPo would work. He said he wanted 1500-1800 headspeed and not 2500.

How are you going to connect the stock pinion gear to the motor – you will need some sort of a coupler I think.

yes that is the head speed he wants but he isnt going to use a stock pinion any way. Me I am forced due to the Shuttle setup.

Water should use a logo/Century/Joker pinion and ignore the 6mm clutch altogether. A outrunner E motor uses a 5mm shaft anyway. He will need a 5mm pinion.

I wouldnt drop below 8s lipo sacks

less runtime
more heat loss due to higher amps

besides that is a all metal 30 probably weigh 5-6lbs even with a 32 eng RTF.

I havent calc his drivetrain though as I am at work.

77T main gear
8T pinion

Motor 800KV
batt 6s1p lipo or 10s1p A123

lipos drop from 4.2V -> What? 3.6V per cell under load right?

A123s drop to 3.0V per right?

77/8= 9.625:1 ratio

3.6V * 6s * 800kv = 17280rpm (no load)

3V * 10s * 800kv = 24000rpm (no load)

no load rpm * .8 = loaded rpm
17280 * .8 = 13824rpm

24000 * .8 = 19200rpm

loaded rpm / gear ratio = head speed

13824rpm / 9.625 = 1436rpm
19200rpm / 9.625 = 1994rpm

Ben-T, Shadowfox,

Thanks a bunch guys, you gave me a lot of things to think about. Where do you get A123's and what about the new LiPo's that you can discharge down to 0?

havent heard about the down to 0 drain lipos. where the link to those?

Heres the best link to A123 cells:

search ebay for DC9360. there are 10 cells in that pack at 3.6V, 3000mah, 70gr per cell. DONT pay much over 100$ including shipping on these batts!!! 10$ a cell is the idea here.

These are 0 drain LiIon batts. Safer charging/handling, very damage resistant in a crash (unlike $$ lipos sacks, and up to a 3C charge rate (i.e 30 min recharge)
Dont remove the tabs on the end of each cell or it wont take solder.
Always subtract a cell when charging on a standard lipo charger. 10 cell needs a 9 cell charge rate...etc..

I am done with expensive lipo sacks as they just arent worth the risk to me any more.

Hi Shadowfox, look in the Electric Batteries & Chargers topic in RR forum then look for "Has anyone heard about these new Lipo's" sounds like a new battery.

If you use batteries from A123 Systems you need to be aware of a couple of things:

1. These cells operate a lower voltage level than LiPo batteries so they require a special charger and balancer. Some of the new LiPo chargers now have A123 capability.

2. These are designed for power tools so they have a much higher weight for the same capacity of LiPo.

3. They are very rugged and less expensive so they’re a good choice if you crash a lot or are on a tight budget.

Some of the other new technologies may work and some may not. I would stay away from anything new until it is proven for model helicopter use. If you are not careful you can spend a lot of money for useless batteries. Only buy something that is proven to work well for helicopters.
