Gohbee Aviation Stinger 30-90 > Got real lucky this weekend

it has been a while since I have flown my Stinger 50, but the weather has gotten better here in Ohio so I got some time to get it out again.
Last Fall I had a Rough Auto Misshap and dinged the boom, ever since I have had a real bad Vib in the tail that I haven't been able to find. And since I have mostly been flying electrics I had a hot start and so now my clutch makes some funny noises, that darn idle up, electrics make you lazy. so when the weather got bad I just forgot it!!! well yesterday I pulled apart the tail and replaced the tail shaft it had a very slight bend and well that didn't do anything still shakes, but I flew anyway since I was out. It still flew great even thought the clutch makes some funny noises and it shakes, well I practiced my funnels flips and etc, as I was checking my fuel I noticed the tail was shaking much worse so I brought it down. Thats when I realized how lucky I was. my boom was totally busted off, right where it was dinged from my auto last fall, it was only held on by the boom supports!!!
needless to say, it is totally apart on my bench now getting a complete going over, guess it's over do! and yep, their was NO liner left in my clutch either, but hey these Gohbee's will fly no matter what!

Sometimes it is better to be lucky than good.
Glad your still predominantly in one piece.

If the liner was gone from your hot start you will most likely need to replace the clutch also.

Feels good to get back out doesnt it.

yep the clutch is beyond shot as well.
so far I have checked the whole head and now the tail and I can't find any "source" of my shake so I guess I will try some new blades and new paddles, since they got nicked in the tail strike last fall, even though they seem to still ballance just fine, the carbon paddles I am not 100% convinced they balance.

the T-rex is nice to fly but I do miss the Stinger, even with 1/2 a tail it still flies great. guess I should have just duct taped it back on and flew again!!!!!!!!!!

Check for a bent tail HUB. Took me a while to find that one.

Unless I'm totally missing something here, isn't it a strong likelyhood that there was crack in the boom cusing this vibration? Won't it be gone once the new boom is installed?

well, got my new clutch, boom and flybar with Paddles, much better now. I am using carbon paddles and they got damaged in the boom strike, just a little crack, but with a new set of paddles the shake is gone, the clutch may have has some effect as well, since thier was no liner left. this time around I went with a set of 22g carbon paddles which did slow it down a bit but man, it is rock solid and incredibley stable. I have always run 14-15g carbon paddles which work very nice on the Gohbee head, super fast but yet it isn't to twitchy. I might just make a new set around 18g. but I don't have any more busted blades!

Glad to hear it is all sorted out.

NEVER, but NEVER wish you had some broken blades around.

I'm not wishing, all I had left was the weighted tips of a great set of rotortechs, so I decided to use them and came up with the 22g set of paddles, acctually i really like them, they are about as fast as the TT greenies, but 3x more solid and stable. with the set of 14g paddles is was wicked fast and with 30%expeo it wasn't twitchy. on my raptor I had to use flybar weights with the 14 and 15g paddles or it was way to twitchy. now I need some new servo's!

I was not so lucky, I took the 90 up for its first flight and lost it after three feet. It was totally my fault. I had the ailerons reversed. It went to drift left, I corrected with a little right, it drifted more, you get the picture. It was a deadly crash, Ill have up tomorrow. Thanks to Dave at Gohbee, I ordered the parts from the feild and O/nighted them. Thanks Dave... For the 30 secs it flew at least it looked goooood ..

lesson learned...

Funtanagasser,
Always check your thumbs on a new heli. Even the best of us can forget things. I have and I'm sure it won't be the last time for any of us.

concept1,
Always check the tail boom after a crash. I've had two crashes on one of my helis and in both crashes the boom was (looked anyway) OK. That is until I took the boom out of the frames. Both had cracked and broken off about 3/4 of an inch inside the frames. Really makes you mad as here you have a perfect looking boom except for about 1 inch of it and it's broken off.

Later...

Scott!
