New & Emerging R/C Helicopters > New Eco 8 Royal complete new look and design!

Some of you are probably familiar with the Ikarus Eco 8, it's a well known medium sized helicopter that offered long gentle duration flights. To my knowledge it also holds the world record for and electric at just over and hour. Ikarus has just recently released it's newest version of and old design and has made several improvements. The new Royal has a totally new look and a very pleasing to the eye canopy. The frame is much more rigid and better designed to carry battery packs without them hanging from the bottom like the old Eco 8. The head has been totally redesigned and comes with 120 degree CCPM swash, and has virtually no slop anywhere in the head. The stock model comes with woodies and no auto-rotation bearing. Ikarus should be ashamed for not upgrading the Royal with at least the auto-rotation bearing and hardened main and tail shafts! The build is straight forward and easy however Ikarus should have done a better job of labeling the parts bags since it required opening several bags to complete certain steps. I'm using the suggested motor, and AXI 2028/08 with a 19 tooth 5mm pinion. My battery is a Poly Quest 20C rated at 4350ma 3-cells. I'm using and Electron 6 receiver and Hitec HS-225BB servos, Art-Tech HH Gyro and a Jeti Spin 44 speed controller. All of this combines to give nice 15 minute flights with mild flying. With the addition of symmetrically blades and increasing the pitch and throttle settings the Royal is capable of mild 3D. The suggested street price will be around $200.00 for the kit minus motor or controller. A computer radio capable of 120 degree CCPM is suggested. I give the Royal a thumbs up for those wanting a very nice stable sports flying helicopter.

Hey Gary....

that is a nice looking canopy ! I have an eco 8 with carbon frames and converted to 120 swatch etc. ... it is relating to fly compared to some of my other helis....

Do you know if that new canopy will fit on the eco-8 ?

With a little modification it should, it's very light for its size and really looks nice.

Great looking machine mate. Do you have any videos? What head speed are you running with the 19T pinion. How do you like the overall feel of the machine?

Wow, it's been nearly a year since my last post, still flying the Royal often. Since fixing the blade tracking problem and upgrading to a metal swash I love my Royal. The head speed is probably 1500-1600, not fast but then I don't fly 3-D. The Polyquest 20C battery now gets out of balance after every flight and I have to slow charge it using my cell balancer. No problems with the Royal for over 11 months, and she is now my favorite helicopter.
Hobby Lobby is the source for all Ikarus products however they have not had time to update their website to reflect parts or kits yet. Hopefully soon they will get everything online for ordering. At $199.00 for the kit it's not a bad deal but you will need to upgrade to a one-way bearing on the main gear, and hardened metal main shaft. I'd also recommend a metal swash and maybe even the entire head.
