e-Electric Conversions > E-Hawk Takes Flight

Hi Guys,

This forum has been so quiet lately I decided I should post a report on a project my buddy Ed and I have been working on. We are in the process of converting two Century Hawk Pro's to electric with help from some of your previous experiences.

We've decided to go with the Century 600 Outrunner as it is a rebranded Zpower Z50-600, CC 45HV and 8s1p lipo setup. We're using stock gearing and a Joker 26T pinion. The motor mount is a aluminum plate bent to shape and bolted to the frame.

We've been able to achieve our desired headspeed of 1750rpm at approx. 82% throttle. According to my e-logger we're averaging just under 20 amps in forward flight and hovers with peaks of 37amps on full collective punch outs.

So far we have several flights on one of the birds and we're still tweaking the setup. The second one was spun up briefly but the gear mesh was not set correctly and this created a some binding that resulted in a stripped torque tube. This has since been corrected but the weather has not permitted a second attempt.

We have an indoor flying session this weekend at a large soccer dome. We will attempt a test hover then with the second bird.

Here are a few photos.

The second E-Hawk, mine, will be installed into a Century TwinStar fuse after it has been test flown.

SOCLARKE,
How's the eHawk in the Twinstar project going? I'm about to start a similar project with a Hawk and Bell 222 using almost all the same components and was wondering how she's flying these days in the Twinstar. Any advice before I start? By the way, your fabbed up aluminum bracket for the motor mount looks great!! Got any extras you want to sell?!?!?!?!? Good job...looks very clean.

Fly what ya got, broken or not

Hey T-wrecks,

Sorry I'm late replying to your post.

The e-conversions of the Hawk have worked out better than we expected. Having the EagleTree micro logger has really has really helped dial in the setup. What we've found is that with the Century motor the 26 tooth pinion is a little too big. A 24 tooth is perfect if you want headspeeds in the 1800 range. I want to bring my headspeed down to around 1650 for a more scale appearance so I've ordered a 22 tooth gear that should do the trick.

I've heard the Century 600 motor is no longer available and you can only get the plus version now. The KV rating on the plus is a little too high for this conversion so if you can't find a 600 take a look at the Z Power 50 /600. It has a lower KV rating and will work well with a 26 tooth pinion.

The motor mount is simply a piece of aluminum sheet that was bent to shape in a vice after heating it gently. I only made up two of them, one for each of the conversions we've done so I have none to sell.

I haven't flown the mechanics in the fuselage yet as I'm in the process of fitting them in and making the landing gear. I'll post pics when I've made some progress.

Happy Landings
