i have a CSM540HH gyro, i flew my raptor fine for about a half hour in 35ish degree weather with no problems, as i was doing my last hover is started spining in circles, i got it down in one piece. i recharged the batteries checked everything out and it still does it????? do they hold memory? such as, if i disconnect the battery will it need to be reset?

hard to trouble shoot when you can not see it, but the 540 reversing is done in the radio so no pin would of come out. Unless it is a gyro failure, other things that it could be is shear pin on tail pully came out. Try it in normal mode a see if you still have the problem.

well i guess i can assume the gyro is shot. there is resistance on the pully, so that aint it. and all the teeth are on the belt.

what can i expect CSM to do about this?

I was thinking it was cold weather related, But if you recharged and it's still spinning then it's not a voltage loss. Hmmm

Check to make sure you do not have a bearing in the tail seized up.I had a similar situation on my Raptor and this is what I had.

a friend had it happen to him. he opened up the 540 (he's an
electrical engr) and a capacitor fell out. It wasn't properly mounted
to the board and the vibration eventually caused the cap's wire lead
to break.

I had a 540 on my R30. I never had that problem but it does not appear to be a great gyro for a 30. Several people have said that you need the programming software and make some changes to tweak it for a 30. Even CSM seems to say it is best suited for a 60 size machine. To be fair, I didn't have a digital servo on it. The GY401 turned it into a new heli. I might just sell the 540.

A couple of things you might want to check before you ash can the gyro.

How fast is it piroetting? Are you sure it's the gyro and not the servo? How does it react on the ground in non-heading hold to control inputs? When you turn it on, does the servo immediately go to one side? Try flexing and lightly tugging on the wiring as you give it t/r commands to eliminate the possibility of a bad wire or connection. Does the linkage bind at all? When you initially set it up did you fly it in normal mode and adjust the t/r push rod until it was trimmed?

If it's still in warranty then you'll have to ship it to Horizon and they will probably send you a new one. They did when the component broke free and rolled around randomly shorting things out as it went. That wasn't fun, and it caused me to have my first experience in repairing and X-Cell 60.

If it's not in warranty then I whole heartedly agree with your idea to replace it with a 401/9253 combo. You won't be sorry. Ask me how I know this.
