This is my first posting, so my apologies if this question has already been asked. I've been flying a .30 size Century Hawk IV for about 4 months. I am thinking about getting a .60 size heli in a month or so and have been given advice on which direction to go. Some say I should go to an "intermidiate" type of heli like a Raptor 50 or 60. The reason behind this suggestion is that when I crash (which happens alot) it won't be as expensive to fix as it would be if I were to plant a Fury trying to learn how to hover inverted. I'd like to get a heli that will grow with my abilities but not kill my pocket book everytime I have to start over. I would also like to get something that I won't have to be "upgrading" soon after I've started to advance my skills. Well, I would like to hear from this forum and see what's been your experience. Thanks in advance!

Crashing a Lot

If you are still crashing a lot.

Would be best to stick with the Hawk till you get your Dollars per Flight ratio down a little lower.

I started with a R 30 - and then bought another one so I could have a constatnt supply of spare parts.... You need to develop your skills using the 30 size machine until you are a little bored with it, then move on to a bigger machine. Bigger means, more visibility, more speed, more area required for maneuvers, and More MONEY. I had been flying my Rappys for a year, and had a Concept 60 in the shop waiting. The first few flights with the 60 were awsome, but I crashed it on a 300 foot loop because of the difference in response time that I was not familar with... Now I have a Rappy 60 on the bench but I will "learn" to fly it all over again. Stay with the 30's for a while

Second Heli

Hi Big Prop,

If you want to get the precision flight performance, power performance and the auto performance of a 60, but do not want the kit cost, engine/exhaust cost, fuel cost or crash cost of a 60, but feel you want to move up, then may I suggest the natural progression to the Century Falcon 46SE V2.

Now you will find yourself with a fully ball raced heli that has the precision feel of a good 60, a power to weight ratio with an OS46FXH that is as good as any of my 60's and with the OS50SXH is better then any of them.

Because it comes with great FRP 600mm blades and weighs in well under 7 pounds, its' disc loading is lighter then that of most 60's so it will autorotate with the best of them.

The torque tube drive will give you 3D performance like a top 60.

And the best of it all is it is inexpensive to buy, inexpensive to run, and inexpensive to operate. And some of the parts are even interchangeable with your Hawk IV also.

A perfect choice for your second heli.

I now spend more time flying my SE then all my other helis put together. Its flight control system is so tight, precise and versatile that I even have it set up to practice the 2002 FAI schedules!!! ...and its cyclic can be set up to be as quick as a 30!!

This heli will put a big smile on your face

second heli?

Hi BigProp

I suggest the following:

Fly your Hawk until you feel limited by it's capabilities, or you crash it hard enough to justify buying a new chopper.

When you're looking at a second helicopter, buy a Raptor 30. A stock Raptor 30 with an OS 32 sx can do almost everything. Replacement parts are cheap, and it's pretty durable.

A third machine?? Another Raptor, because you'll evenually crash the other one (no reflection on your abilities of course).

My $.02

Since you are flying the Hawk, fly the dog out of it and as said if you can't afford it stay with the lower priced machines until you crash less. All advice above is good. If you want a larger feel at a lower cost the new Falcon SE is a lot of heli for the dollar. I also have last year's SE with and OS 50 and it performs well. Maintainance will be easy since you are used to many of the componants. The most important advice is get what you feel comfortable with and are able to feed and water.

3d and a 30 helicopter

Howdy!!
You can go pretty far with a Hawk (or any 30 size) as far as 3d goes. Everything is just a little slower. Things like climbing tic-tocs and ascending funnels are'nt really feasable, at least, they won't have near the pizzaz of a larger ship. I had a Hawk several years ago and loved it. Now that I have been to the Centuryheli website and seen all that the Falcon 50 SE has to offer I am very tempted to get another one.. I am also very interested in the Raven 50, it is apparently the CCPM version of the Falcon. Parts prices for theese birds are very reasonable and the quality is much higher IMO than the Raptor or the Scedeu. If someone were looking to by a 60 as their 2nd heli, I think the best choice is the Freya. MUCH easier to build and setup than the Fury, and cheap to crash and easy to fix. My 2 cents....

Argue for your limitations and sure enough, they're yours

Hawk 3D

Inspector Fuzz is right, The Hawk will take you well into 3D. As it has all the pitch range necessary and is very light, it will have the best power to weight range available for a 30, but still will not have that of the Falcon or the Raven 50. As stated earlier, because of the light disc loading the Falcon SE or The Raven are also ideal for the sutorotation training.
