Radio - Spektrum DSM > A thread for Mr. Beard and Spektrum people to read, improvements wanted looking forward

Ok, I currently own a DX7, I think it is fantastic. I was thinking since we all know the DX9 is going to happen and I am certain many more radios etc to come from Spektrum why not voice our opinions in a thread to summarize what we feel as Spektrum owners would be "wanted" and "needed" in our opinions. To kick this off I will voice my few things and please people lets keep it realistic! I am hoping Mr. Beard and Spektrum will listen to us and incorporate some of what we say into their next Spektrum tx models to come.

Things I would like to see in the future Spektrum Transmitters:

(1) Since the tx is so light in comparison to may transmitters it would be nice to see the strap attachment hook located lower on the radio to provide a better center of gravity. WIth my DX7 it always feel like I am working to keep the top from tilting up and is quite annoying. In addition to this perhaps some of the electronics could be placed differently to add more weight to the top section, bottom line I feel something in this regards needs to be done. (This is my current biggest beef.)

(2) A better quality power regulator of sorts to reduce or eliminate the "buzzing" sounds we receive through the grill,,,,everyone has heard this I am certain.

(3) Ability to assign the timer to the throttle stick, this was brought up by other members and they should have that option as many other txs' do.

(4) More attention to the "quality look" and more importantly the "quality feel". The DX7 was a huge improvement, it would be nice to see a much higher quality one in this respect next time around.

(5) If possible a shorter "rubber" style antenna rather than the current plastic foldable style, perhaps a removable one "thread, like coax?:....this may just be me thinking this however....

(6) Larger mah battery for the tx to offer much longer use before charging.

(7) Having a jog dial like the 9C Super or the Tumbler like the JR 9303 would be awesome to have!

(8) Model selection from the main screen, be nice to not have to turn off and hold both buttons to re select another model.

In regards to the RECIEVERS:

(1) The two stubby antennas that come out of the rxs are brittle and will bend back and break far too easily. Either some sort of rubber re enforced cone at base of them or something should be looked into, this is a big rant for many.

(2) The connectors that plug into the rx "antenna" are weak and can pull out pretty easily, somehow a new plug or modified plug should be looked into imho.

I know there are more items, you peeps fill in the gaps, that is the kick off. I sincerely hope some Spektrum people will view this and take it seriously, after all the more happy customers you have the more you will sell. Best sales and loyal customers are developed by word of mouth imho!

Thanks,

Shawn

Great list Shawn!

What I miss the most on my DX7 is 3 and 7 in your list. Things that I would like to see, but not so important, is 2 and 4. Also agree that the antennas on the rx's are a bit flimsy. Personally I like the DX7 antenna since it makes it possible to put it in my tx case without taking off the antenna, I think it also improves range slightly if you tilt it and make sure its vertical when you hold the tx.

I know the nitro guys think its pretty bothersome setting up a governor with the DX7, but if the DX9 is based on the 9303/9X it should be taken care of.

What I would LOVE to see in a DX9 is some kind of telemetry that would show info transmittet from sencors connected to the AR9000 - from what I understand the AR9000 all ready have a data port. If you in addition could activate an alarm if values goes over/under some threshold values it could be used for monitoring lipo voltage on electric helis and stuff like that. Doesnt have to be too advanced - just show the value as a number on the screen with a free label (ie "Volts" ). We are talking killer product here

I'll make this my dream high end radio request. The Base of this would start with features such as found in the DX7 and programmability and functional features of the 9303.

(1) 9 to 12 Channels (I need 9 for my P-38)

(2) Timer assignable to throttle or switch (selectable by software)

(3) More eCCPM selections. I would love to have 140 eCCPM for my eRaptor

(4) Side mounted rotary controls similar to those on the Futaba 9C

(5) USB Interface for software upgrades to radio and to save model setups to a PC

(6) A removable Transmit Antenna with a high quality connector.

I love my DX7 and would definitely pay a premium for a good high end radio that would give me high end JR like features and quality with Spektrum DSM2 technologh built into the radio rather than it being an addon for a radio designed for 72mhz.

I think he address this one. Look at the antennas in the photo:

Hard to see but they now look stress relieved.

Mark, not at all. See the two little antennas coming out of the small antennas hooked up to receiver? That is what I am talking about, those small wires bend back, break easily.

That is exactly what I am talking about. Look closely. There is something different about them. The look strain relieved.

I will try to locate a better photo.

Here... Look at the little antenna wires.

Great list.

I would like to see:

Better antennas on the RX also.

9303 platform (drool)

Deeper plug-ins for the RX, seems the servos wires can be pulled out to easily.

Larger pack of course would be nice too.

We have the electronics part of the equation under control; but how about the ergonomics of the transmitter? The neck strap problem is a good input. But to go a bit further:
I would like to see a way of having the stick gimbals and palm rest rotate outward so that your thumbs are aligned with the stick axis. The royal evo can rotate to stick gimbals (I believe); but how about a part of the transmitter body being able to rotate with the sticks to support your hand and allow the thumbs to work inline with the stick axis?

Actually I wonder if they will have long length extension cables for the receivers. It could be nice to locate a satelite receiver out in the wing where it definitely could not be blanked by the metal of a big gasser engine.

Airbear, big motors will not affect these, they did extenesive tests will all kinds of aircraft including turbines, it's a non issue.

Yes..receiver extentions will be available

you will be able to place the mini receivers further out with the extentions

Actually, this is a cool thread. We are definately listening and want to make improvements.

We have addressed the receiver antenna issue by adding plastic in that area.

We will have replacement receiver extensions in 6, 9, 24 and 36" lengths very soon.

you guys read my mind, setting up a new lepton with ar7000 and was wishing the second receiver could be just a little longer, space is at a premium on the lepton.

That is good news Paul, that is the right attitude to sucess imho. So far I feel our requests are very realistic and obtainable for Spektrum.

Excellent idea for a thread!

I too would like to emphasize the value of a USB interface for firmware upgrades, model parameter exchange (forums - please post your settings...) and interface (switches, channel) assignment. I am used to this type of functionality on my Castle ESCs and love it. It helps keep my product up-to-date and provides greater flexibility than the built-in TX interface can provide.

I would like to see all Spectrum receivers accomodate all type servo connections. I don't think it is cool that I would have to cut the tabs off my Futaba servo connectors or cut notches in the receiver case for that combo to work. AR7000 receiver is an example.

There are only 2 types of servo connectors - Futaba - And all other brands - That's Futaba's own anti-compatibility to try and detour you from buying/using any other brand products - Futaba is the only brand that does this - Futaba users support this behavior by purchasing Futaba products as-is and not demanding that they standardize their products to be compatible with other brands - It's not realistic for all other brands to accommodate Futaba's non-standard behavior - I recommend to either trim the tabs or complain to Futaba - They should accommodate you not you accommodate them.
