I just got my buddy a set of 104mm Carbon Tail rotor blades for his Raptor 60 (its his B-day). From the stock blades, will there be a noticible difference in performance? Also since they are about 6mm longer than the stock blades, will they work with no problems? thanx

PS. What are you other Raptor 60 pilots using for Carbon Tail rotor blades??

My two cents is that with the carbon you hae a much more effective gyro. If you are putting plastic tailblades through a high stress manuever like a chaos(which im not doing yet!!), your gyro is not gonna work as well if you tail blades are flexing.

My list of crappy tailblades( my opionon based on my experience)

Raptor 30 TB
MA Clear Plastic TB
JR Plastic TB
SAB 110mm carbons (to thin) TB
Hirobo Sceadu plastic TB
I love my MAH 110mm carbons,
i have never seen a TB as nice as that. Even Todd Bennett is flying them, and he cant get the tail to bow out.

Undecided

I used to be pro carbon until I saw Russ McCutcheon (an Xcell Rep)
totally spank a Fury 60 Expert in Vancouver BC last summer.

Russ was just using the stock clear flimsy Furby tailblades and that machine didn't skip a beat. All manuevers were down low on the deck with lots of piro stuff.

I'm beginning to think carbon blades might be alot of hype.
They sure look cool though

David, correct me if I am wrong. Cliff used flimsy looking plastic blades, but I don't think they were the MA plastic ones. They looked different and I remember Cliff saying someone gave him a pair to try and he liked them do much that he got more for the rest of his helis.

Agreed, centrifugal force probably makes stiffer than they appear when stationary.

The difference doesn't show up until you're doing some kind of maneuver that loads the engine hard while piroueting. That's when you see the difference and it becomes pretty obvious. On FAI flight you don't do that kind of maneuvers. Even on hard 3D there's only a few ones that require that kind of authority but when you need it it's there.

Like gyroman I went ahead with Jason's website recomendation about the 110 MAH blades. They are one tough set to beat. I got three sets after I tested the first.

David,

I think in Cliff's case he can use a couple of ice cream sticks as blades and wouldn't make much of a difference. His piro rate is wired from his brain to his thumb . For other much less gifted pilots such as me I see a big difference. I was using the stock transparent blades with the 601 and you could tell the piros under load where kept in rate only because the 601 forced it to but they were not as smooth as when I used the MS and then even better with the MAH ones. You should ask him to try the MAH from MA he might give us some interesting feedback.

I have to put in my 2 cents in on this one. I have flown both on a small handfull of machines. Plastic, Glass filled nylon tail blades are just fine if... If you find a pair that are in balance. I had a terrible viberation and troubleshot it to out of balance tail blades. Who has ever thrown a set of tails on a balancer or gram scale?? Not me until then. The blades were 1.15 grams off. Yes, it was more than enough to viberate screws out in a hover within a couple minutes. My c/f horizontal fin was a blurr, I bet it was moving up and down 2 inches.. My point.. I proceeded to look at other sets of plastic tails I had. Robbe " the BAD ones", Thunder Tiger, Kyosho, etc. They seemed to vary quite a bit in weight. They were close, but nothing like the carbon blades. The 2 sets of carbon blades I had were more or less matched. As I mentioned, I still use both kinds. Just pay close attention to weight and balance. Misperfections may not be visible.

"Who has ever thrown a set of tails on a balancer or gram scale." The answer to that anybody who wants a smooth helicopter. I have found that even graphite tail blades vary quite a bit in weight. Most gram scales aren't sensitive enough for weighing tail blades, I use a set of powder scales from a reloading kit. There are about 28 grams to the ounce, but there are 437 grains to the ounce, and the scale reads to the tenth of a grain. A drop of CA on the side of a graphite blade can make a real difference in how smooth the tail is.

MAH Blades

Guys,

Talk to Sluggo (kathyandchris@sympatico.ca) about the MAH blades. Chris is selling these beautiful main and tail rotor blades at great pricing. I just bought 5 sets from him and can't wait to try them out. I'm told they've got a better feel than V-Blades.
