e-Electric Batteries & Chargers > Whats your Charging set up ?

hi guys

I now own that logo 20 that was on skylines site for ages. Iv never owned or had much to do with electric flight, so..What set up do you guys use to charge your helies. Only use one top quality charger for the lot (robbe infinity ect..) and no mains set up at home. Or something like the multi 12 / supanova for the field and a cycler at home.

I do have the Mainlink Digiliser2000. Which is a charger / disharger 1-16 cells and more but its not a fast charger , and having 4 packs of 12 cells is a snails pace affair

I think i would like one charger to do the lot and also can plug into the mains at home. All i seem to do is charge a battery to charge a battery . Just want the best for my £200.00 battery investment.

So far Iv looked at :Infinity 2, Supanova , Multi 12 ( linking 2 up ), mainlink mini 4, Peak infinity ,..

I use an Orbit Microlader Pro and have 2 - 34 AH wheelchair gel cells, 2 - 55 AH Optima deep cycle batteries, and a single Sears DieHard 100+ AH deep cycle battery. All this is good for a weekend of campng and losts of flying. the batteries stay in the van. I have a 12A power supply at home which allows me to charge my larger packs at only 3.5.

For best performance, you should use a charger that will put out at least 6 amps into your Nicds. Mine does 8 amps. Although some chargers state a charging rate of 5 or 6 amps, they fail to put out that much at anywhere near 24 cells. A good charger is a must, I'm afraid. Do you want to fly once every 45 minutes, or once every 24 minutes?

Cheers!

Cheers!

I have 2 SuperNova's that run off an Iota 30amp power supply at home and a marine deep cell when traveling.

5Amp's charging is good enough for myself right now, but may need to look into an Orbit with new cells on the horizon.

Cheers...Jeff

As Glen points out, make sure the charger you get will charge 20-24 cells with at high current. So many chargers say they will charge at 5A, but can only do this for lower cell counts. A charger that will put 6 to 8A into 20-24 cells is ideal.

I don't have a power supply for the charger. I always run it off a deep cycle battery. High current power supplies are expensive.

just kidding with the lincs thing cos i earnt it being born in grantham and living there untill 17 years old.

i'm trying to get a rap 50 together at the mo, been using someone else's and was impressed. not sure wether i can handle the power though,

I use a Schulze 636 charger to charge my 24cell packs. It can push 8.1 amps if they are charged as two 12cell packs. But with 24 cells, it goes down to 7 amps I believe.

Batteries charged at 3 amps compared to 8 amps has noticable power difference. So I try to push as much as I can into them.

hi stephen

I spoke to bob johnston and he recomended the supa nova, so that what iv got now. I can charge my 24 cells in 50mins on auto at about 3.5 amp.Are you saying that if i put 8amps in , performance will be better.would that be longer flight times or more power. See i always thought that a slower charge rate and the battery held more charge.

And is there a difference in power levels between a battery that has just come off charge, and one that has been standing for half a day.Because iv been doing the charging at work , then fly when i get home. would another boost of charge just before i fly help.

Can any one give me there 3D full set up for the CMS 540 on this model. im not to familiar with this gyro, im on the futaba ff9

My first electric heli and its great , Its very odd taking a model to the starting line with no signs of life .

Any experienced e-flyer knows that higher charge currents yield higher discharge voltage and, therefore, more power available to the motor. This is why higher charge current (within reason!) is desirable. There are other issues of course... In my limited experience I have never found a charge rate much less than what the cells are comfortable with to be of any benefit (wrt capacity or longevity) whatsoever.

Yes, a NiCd or a NiMH battery will be much better right after a peak charge. Re-peaking helps (I personally don't like this practise) but the best performance is still obtained from a full-fresh charge.

I use an Orbit Pro so that I get close to 8A into 24 X 2400mAh cells. Good performance from the batteries and 24 minutes or so is much, much better than waiting for almost an hour!!!

hi rscamp

I can see now , that when the weather warms up over here, If i had 3 flight packs an 8 amp charger , a great days flying would be had.

thanx for reply

I use an Orbit Pro, I charge my 12 & 14 cell 2400's in around 20 minutes. Great charger in my opinion. I just sold a Super Nova and bought a Triton to be able to use both chargers on my Li-Poly setups.

I use a SuperNova for the 12 cell Nicad packs I fly in my Logo10.

I am looking at getting a Logo20 and was wondering if there would be any problem using (2) 12 cell packs connected with a "Y" harness in the Logo20? That way I could use the packs in either heli. All cells would be CP2400SCR's

I usually visualize a "Y" harness as a parallel connection, but if you will be electrically connecting the two packs in series yer fine.

right.

If you want to keep the 2 packs separate but
have the logo20 fly on 24 cells, you need to
hook them up in series and make a little
wiring harness (NOT a Y)

Sorry for the confusion, I ment a harness that would put the packs in series. As there would be three connectors I thought it was called a "Y" connector.

Basically two male Deans Ultra and one female Deans Ultra with the POS and NEG of the males connected and the remaining POS and NEG of the male going to the female plug.

that sounds fine.

I dont know if the supernova is capable of
charging the entire 24 cell pack though. If not,
you'll have to split it and charge the halves.

A connector Y setup like this, I use this on my starter packs.
