Looking at http://www.heliproz.com/prodinfo.asp?number=804577 but not sure if I should just get a vcouple of car batteries and make my current one cordless (nice batteries are $65 a set and starter is $109 shipped look like six of one or half dozen other)....

Anyone have this starter ??? Any suggestions as to a good starter if you are going to be keepingg it for sometime ???

THanks !!!!

It don't get much better than this...

There are a lot of great setups out there. This is what I have finally rested on. It's compact because the battery is out of the way. You can pop the battery off for storage. Batteries are Lion and 3AH so you have enough juice to go for weeks. The Dynatron is arguably the best and strongest starter out there. If you have the corresponding Makita tools you can share the batteries.

The cons are, it's a little heavy and you have to purchase the battery(ies) and charger which is about $140 or buy the Makita drill setup for $260 or so. The drill kit comes with 2 batteries, the correct charger and an awesome drill/driver.
ebay has the batteries and charger for reasonable cost should you decide to only purchase those.

You buy the battery adapter from A Finer Edge Manufacturing for about $37.

To me, this is the BEST.

I HAD one but that noisy piece of junk is somewhere in a pasture near our field Do yourself a favor and get a Dynatron and use the car packs. I did not use expensive packs and it works just fine.

By reading Heliproz advertising about that starter, they say it's an awesome starter. We all know it's a piece of junk. Makes you wonder what else Heliproz says is good.

Rotor Trash, give me your address, I'll send it right out

A Finer Edge Manufacturing like it so much they used my starter on the front page!

Notice the batteries have that white connector in the center. That's the balancing plug. The charger keeps the cells balanced automatically.

There have been some complaints of gears stripping out on the hydrotork starter that you saw at heliproz. The dynatron is the best but that setup is steep. I've been very happy with this setup.

If you need a one way in the start shaft I'd recomend this one. It will last forever, but it's expensive. You could get a mavrikk witha one way for $30.

I've used the TorqueMaster 180 and RCcar battery setup. It's a great setup too and not nearly as pricey as my current setup. I just don't like the battery packs sticking out the side. Keeping the packs charged is a pain if you have 7 cell packs. You either have to have a 14 cell charger or charge them independantly.

My new setup is just pop the pack in the charger and 45 min later it's done for few more weeks. Don't even wait, just grab the second pack and snap it in.

BTW, I have a charger for sale that does dual 7 cell packs at once.

I use an 18V cordless drill that cost me $14 at Harbor Freight. Starts my 50s just fine and I did start a 70 for another guy once. I don't know about a 90.

It'll work on a 90 too, not great but it will work.

I use a 24v cordless drill. Starts my 90 no sweat and it has a slipper clutch to prevent damage if the engine hydrolocks too. Plus it was cheap, NZD$100 WITH 3 battery packs. Works for me.

Dont buy the Heliproz starter, pure rubbish. you would be better off using your fingers to turn the motor over. I had one and returned it, junk.

I run the setup off of Ricks helis website, Hobbico starter with packs, and I do use the start shaft from Heliproz, its nice as it has a one way and pulls out to store.

I also use the K&S battery holders. nice stuff.

I found the cordless drills to be a little on the slow side.

Good question, I'd have to check the official specs on it. It's a GMC Branded Drill - made in China of course.

Found it, it's here:

Wow, compared to the 4800 RPM Dynatron I guess it IS slow. Never had an issue with it so far though...

Hey as long as it starts what you fly you're good. The faster rpm starters start them a bit easier and quicker.

How ironic... I just got done adapting a B&D 18V battery to my Hobbico TorqMaster180. Then I saw this thread. LOL. Anyways, I bought the Hobbico battery that adapts to the starter but it wasn't strong enough to turn my Hyper 50. The starter is rated for a 1.8cu." engine. I got fed up with it and decided to give this a try. The battery runs $40 and the charger is $25. Whats cool is I don't need to remove the battery from the starter or disconnect any wires. It slides right into the charger. The charger is a peak charger for 12-18V B&D slide batts. So it works with my 12V and my 18V drills. It flashes red when its charging, turns solid when it is done and will even tell you if the battery is bad. I tried it on my EVO50 and it turned it no problem. Here are some pics.

Some more pics of the inside. If you know how to solder it's not that hard to do. I first attached the bottom of the battery to the bottom of the starter with 4 bolts and nuts. Then attached the terminals to the side of the battery by the spring loaded slide lock. I then had to solder the termninal wires to the battery leads. The top of the battery needs some plastic cut out to make room for the wires but was easily done with a pair of diag wire cutters.
