Hi,

Does somebody know if it's possible to change easily a DX7 from mode 1 to mode 3 (throttle and rudder on the right stick).

Regards,

Chem

Woah!!! Another mode 3 pilot!!! Are you left handed by any chance?? We shall rule the world some day ....

When I got my first helicopter (Walkera #60), I had to rewire the transmitter (stock WK-701) from mode 1, to mode 3. I have a little experience in this matter...

About a week ago, I sent an email to Spektrum regarding this exact same topic. I had asked them if they were planning on releasing any mode 3/4 transmitters and if not, possibly a firmware upgrade that would allow the end user to perform this swap without having to do any changes to the wiring. The response I got was a short "sorry, we are not planning on ever making any mode 3/4 transmitters. thank you and have a nice day". So much for that...

Anyway, it seems to me that it would be easier to go from mode 2, to 3, because all you would have to do is swap the gimbal assemblies. The onscreen trim icons will not be changeable, so the rudder and aileron will always be displayed in the same place as per factory settings. If you're going to go from 1 to 3, then it may be as simple as swapping the wires from one potentiometer to the other (or the whole pot. itself).

I'm actually going to be picking up a DX6 tonight. When I take it apart to look at the wiring, I'll post back here and let you know what I found out.

Hello,
now we are 3 with Mode 3.

I have a DX6 which I converted to Mode 3 very easily. The potis are fixed with 2 screws each an the wires are long enough to switch them.

I hope this goes for the DX7 as well, because I have just orderd one.

Best regards
Ulrich

Its a miracle! I thought I was the only one! I have found my fellow Mode 3'ers. Now we are 5 and I was wondering this exact same thing since I would really like to purchase the DX7 as well. Please report back with your findings. Nice to see others finally.

mode 3 Conversion

Well fellow Mode3ers apart from the bottom of the start-up screen showing left and right trims back to front (who looks at them anyway)all seems to work fine. You just need to extend both the 6 line cables of both controlls so they reach the other side. "standard conversion".
Tested all main functions seems fine, i have not installed the system in my helli yet but on the bench all looks good.

NOTE!!!! the shop said that doing the change over will cause a program problem but could not say what problem, as yet i have found no issues, will try to post some pics and keep you informed.

I just swithced the 3 pot cables on the ail----->rudder.
I too had the trims showing the movement backwards so i swapped position of the external cables on the pots (blu in the middle).
Now trims move in the desired direction.

How did you swap the 6 cables?

Did he say why would moving left stick to the right and right one to the left position cause program problem? Because it doesn't make any sense, they still output the same signal. Unless he was talking about wires lenght.

I think he only mentioned soemthing about a "program problem" b/c he is part of a global conspiracy to do away with us Mode 3ers... there should be no problems...

Anyway I was told by an online retailer to buy the Mode 2 radio and just mechanically switch the sticks...considering each side is only held on by 4 screws.

I'm also a Mode 3 pilot. I spoke to Paul Beard and John Adams at the FF last weekend here in LV. They suggest unsoldering, swapping and resoldering the 4 sets of 3 wires that go to the aileron and rudder gimbal pots and trims.

This refers to a mod done on a Mode 1 DX7

Doing so may void your warranty though, so be careful.

Hi Guys

I just Cut the 6wire ribbon cable at 45 degrees in the centre so not to get confused and extended it with some old computer hard drive cable ,You know the stuff. be careful of shorts, solder the extention insulate and away you go .As for the Program problem he didn't say, Who knows ? I think Orion is right about the conspiracy theory.
Corrado, Have you got the trim display working correctly? ie: Left is left ? I was not fussed , but if it is easy ill have another look.
Please explain again !

Regards

PS There would almost certainly be a warrantee issue!!!!

so..if I was to buy this radio brand new will it be better to buy a mode 2 or mode 1? I originally thought a Mode 1 would be easier to convert but these hobby guys are telling me to go with the Mode 2 and mechanically swap the sticks. For those of you who have already done the conversion what do you think?

Although not necessary you'll probably want to be able to swap the trims as well, so whichever method most easily allows this is probably the one to use.

I wouldn't be surprised to see that some of the wiring harness still might need to be unsoldered/resoldered with a gimbal mechanism swap, cuz one set will probably end up being too short. This was the case w/my 7C.

It bears repeating that since both Paul Beard and John Adams suggested starting with a Mode 1 tx and then unsoldering, swapping and resoldering the 4 sets of 3 wires that go to the aileron and rudder gimbal pots and trims, this is probably the best method to use.

I'll say also that from my own experience of having chosen Mode 3, if there's ANY chance you might consider going to the effort to convert to Mode 2, DO IT. It'll save you endless inconvenience down the road, not the least of which is that no one can fly your birds and you can't fly theirs if you fly Mode 3.

I'm an old fart and my Mode 3 muscle memories are too well burned in to safely make the switch, but a younger flyer could certainly benefit from it.

thanks for the response...You are right about Mode 2 being the better route to take but think I'll stick with Mode 3. I tried Mode 2 and just dont like it. It just feels so natural for me doing it the mode 3 way. Besides I dont mind going through the extra effort in converting to Mode 3. Also I would never really let anyone fly my helis or would want to fly someone else's. Just too much liability in that! lol

I am left handed so flying mode 3 comes natural for me, no intention to change.

I unsoldered the 2 sets of 3 wires from the aileron and rudder stick and swapped them (5 minute job). I left the trims where they are because i never use rudder trim and i feel confortable having the aileron trim crossed to the other side.

I would like Clarify Something.

Because the the 6 core ribbon cables are to short to reach. A simple cross over of the gimbles is not possible, you MUST cut BOTH ribbon cables extend them then cross over and re solder
This way all functions then cross over including trims. The only thing you will notice that is not right is that on the bottom of the "DISPLAY" the Left trim shows up on thr Right and the Right trim shows up on the left. If there was no display you wouldn't even know.

Sorry for any confusion. This is much easyer to do on a Mode1 radio.

Kind regards Mode3 Forever
