LXT Adaptor

I have a YS 91 w/Viper Head in my Predator Carbon 90 Max and have had lots of trouble getting it started. I just got the Hobbico/Sullivan adaptor and it allows you to use a Makita LXT 18v Lithium battery, it’s a clean mod and starts the YS 91 with ease. It’s a little pricy by the time you get the battery and the good charger, but it beats lugging a car battery around. The charge has lasted me two weeks now and the thing just keeps starting the YS no sweat.

Hammer,

Are you using the Sullivan S613 starter shaft extension?

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCLY8

I have S613 extension along with the Dynatron starter & Makita 3-Amp/Finer Edge adapter set up and so far it is the best I have used. I literally just got all of the components this week. It turns over my OS-91SZ & Zenoah G231 with no problem at all. I am currently in discussions right now with Sullivan to develop an airplane spinner cup adapter to fit the S613. KSJ has a similar arrangement.

I've been recommending the spinner cup to Sullivan for their extension for several years now. The KSJ spinner cup has been available since shortly after they created their start shaft. I'm guessing it's been over eight years.

The guy I am working with at Sullivan asked me what sort of market response they could expect by releasing the spinner cup assembly to fit their S613. From my perspective, there seems to be a lot more combination heli/airplane guys out there than I am aware of. The club I belong to is primarily airplanes and the guys that fly helis fly airplanes as well. Therefore that is about 5 sales right there.

The KSJ set up is somewhere in the $85-$90 range (start shaft & spinner assy). The Sullivan S613 is around $65 so they should be able to keep the pricing competitive. Whether or not they will sell the daylights out of it remains to be seen. All I know is that my KSJ 1-way bearing finally gave up trying to start my 90s and gasser. I purchased a 2nd 1-way and it began to struggle shortly after going into service. I had been reading on RR about the Sullivan and decided to give it a shot.

I will let you know what Sullivan ultimately comes back with.

I have heard nothing but good news about the Vario starter shaft. It was a toss up between it and the Sullivan for me.

I use the Sullivan shaft on a Finer edge-18v Makita powered Dynatron. The best setup going IMHO.
I fly with the OP and after using his for several months I finally got my own. It should be the last one I ever buy.

I had Vario unit, but found it a bit too short for starting my EVO 50. The Robbe unit is the best unit available. I suspect the Sullivan may be a close second.

Vario makes two different length hex shafts. Maybe you had the shorter one. I started my EVO50's no problem with mine.

No, I had longer one. Well the longer one of two Ricks used to sell (150mm?). I didn't say it didn't work, but the longer Robbe unit works better.

Well it's been a full year and my Torquemaster 90 powered by the Finer Edge adapter has been absolutely flawless.

I've had no issues, and the original battery has started several hundred
helis and is only charged once a month.

Not the cheapest solution by far, but the piece of mind outweighs the cost....

I amusing the Finer Edge adapter with a Sullivan Dynatron.

I use the KSJ wand system with the starter cup for airplanes. It starts an OS 120 with no problem.

I also have a Finer Edge adapter on the back of a Hobbico Starter in a big belt drive setup for larger airplane engines. It turns over my Zenoah G-38 on a Stinger 120, and a Quadra 35 on a Sig 1/4 scale cub.

I use the heli starter wand with a Tiger 50.

For some reason, I never had luck with any other battery setup. Either I let them discharge, or who knows what, but this setup is the shizzle.

Spend the money. 20 years from now, you won't miss it.

I may not be able to turn a kit into a plane, but I can turn a plane into a kit...

Hi guys,
I have installed it on my Sullivan Dynatron and I am more then happy with it. Allthough here in Spain they almost made me bankrupt for buying the drill , 2 bateries and the chargers... for about 500 euros all together.

anyway I dont want anything else anymore and it start all of my helis in just one touch of the button.

Here is mine...
Regards from Spain,
Dave

Sullivan Start Shaft - Adapter for Airplanes

For those of us that also fly airplanes and would like to use our Dynatron-Finer Edge-Makita-Sullivan set up, I came up with a reasonable solution. I purchased a spare starter wand and nose cone directly from Sullivan ($36 including shipping). I had the wand cut down to size and had a 1/4-20 thread put on the end. The aluminum spinner cup and rubber cone are original from my Dynatron which has a corresponding 1/4-20 thread in it. The spare nose cone was necessary so that I could readily swap between the helicopter wand and the airplane arrangement.

I was originally running the KSJ helicopter & airplane spinner cup set up, which now that I think about it is probably about the same amount as what I have in my Sullivan starter shaft combo. With the Makita 3-Amp pack and the larger 1-way bearing, this thing has worked great so far.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Just got mine setup. It was fairly easy but required a phone call for clarification. About 10 minutes of labor was it. I highly recommend this setup.

The best way to make a small fortune in RC Helis is to start out with a large one. Debt from above!

Yep I have a 1.5 Mah pack on mine. It works fine, I just haven't found out how many starts I'll get out of it inbetween charges. I suppose half as many as the 3 Mah Packs.
