Recently bought one of these adapters off a RR advertiser:

They fit both the Hobbico and Sullivan starters. It allows you to run a 18 volt Li-ion Makita Drill pack for power.

This starter is nuts. It doesn't even slow down starting an OS 91. I would not use it on a hydro-locked motor, it would definately break something. The 3 Amp-hour pack ought to last forever and can be charged in about 30 minutes.

If you have Makita tools, or can get a deal off Ebay like I did, this is a very worthwhile tool.

It's great if you already have a Makita set, which most people don't.

The batteries are $90 and the charger is $120 by themselves. I'm not putting $250 into a stupid starter. That's on par with paying $150 for a fuel jug and pump (Jersey Modeller).

I would rather have seen an adapter for batteries of more popular brands, like Black and Decker, Ryobi, or even DeWalt. Batteries that cost $40 and chargers that cost $30. I emailed the guy in that regard, and was told that he wasn't going to bother with different brands, due to the cost of tooling.

Way to go, eliminating up to 75% of your possible market.

The assembled starter (HB90) with the adapter is just under 17", with the battery attached 18.5" Height is about 4". It does not make the starter any taller, just longer.

It won't fit in my flight box with the battery attached and the K&S start wand. If you have a removeable wand, your golden. I just remove the battery and stick it in the box.

The cost is up to the individual. I hate cheap tools. RC Helis cost money, period.

If you look around a little bit you could come up with the battery and charger much cheaper. It took me five seconds to find this:

You aren't going to find cheap Li-ion packs for cordless drills. I have had a number of Nicad/Nihm drills and they are always dead when I need them. You don't have that problem with the Li-ions, they hold a charge.

Batteries are $60.00 on Ebay and charge it with your lipo charger you already have. Adapter to charge is $ 3.00 from Makita parts. Not as dumb as we look.

I think you still spent way too much money for a starter, but you keep talking down to me, I don't really care.

No one ever said you can be cheap in this hobby.

We aren't talking about a drill that you use once in a while. I use my starter all the time, and charge it on the way to the field every time, whether it really needs it or not. I don't wait until something is dead before I charge it. If I'm going flying, I put everything on charge. If I forget, I have a field charger that will run on the way to the field.

A $78 battery, regardless of chemistry, works just as well in this circumstance, as a $30 set of RC car packs connected to my Torquemaster 180. You just have to keep it charged. Oh, and I have a charger for that already, too. And, I'm not in the market for another drill.

But you be proud of that $250 starter and go forth. I'm buying $250 worth of fuel, instead.

Sorry if you think I am talking down to you. I found no need to buy a drill. I have $93.00 in my set up. I had $70.00 in my other set up that I sold for $ 60.00. Flying a 90 it makes a difference. If I was starting only a 50 it would not matter.

However, I only fly 90s, so I know what it takes to start one

That's why I had to get the TM180; my YS91s killed my TM90.

I could care less what your thoughts are about how and what I spend my money on. The entire hobby is about having fun and wasting money is all part of the game. I can afford to have a $200 plus starter, so I bought one.

The entire point of this post was to review a new tool availible to our community.

Nobody was talking down to you, but you may have read that from my post. I will admit that I could have left out the "it took me five seconds to find this:" and came out with a better post. Lesson learned.

Yes, the $30 car packs work, I used them for years. You are correct, they have to be kept charged, and charged often. I got sick of that and chose to go a different route with something that offers more torque, less charging, no more soldering packs and connectors, and more time flying.

If the product is not for you, great. Have fun with the hobby, and do your own thing, but don't worry about what others spend.

The moral of the story is use what works for you. It's your money so spend it how you choose.

EricF, where can you get LiIon drill packs for $40 and LiIon drill chargers for $30?

No doubt, the Makita setup is expensive (a relative term in this hobby), owning a drill that can use those battery packs is a huge plus. The packs in my DeWalt drill need to be replaced and for the cost of replacing two packs I might as well just buy a new drill. The incremental cost isn't that much and you get a new charger as well. Maybe it's time for me to checkout the Makita drills.

This is certainly a nice neat and clean setup.

If you don't like it don't buy it.

I've got the same set up as Cricket. When everyone else's starter is dead, they reach for mine. With this setup you can crank motors all day without having to charge the battery. Price out a set of good Nimh packs for your starter, I think you will find that the Makita pack (I paid $54 on Ebay) is no more expensive.

Um no, but I was going to compare the weight to the R/C NiXx packs as well as a custom made pack I'm thinking of making for my starter.

Just got it put together tonight. I bought the whole Makita drill/driver setup that comes with 2 18V 3AH Lions and charger. That was $274 delivered. I needed a new drill/driver setup so that wasn't a problem.

This is one nice strong and portable starter.

The charger has different modes including discharge, conditioning and trickle charge. It will shut down automatically also. It does all of that automatically after it reads the battery. Has an internal cooling fan an lots of mode indicator lighting.

PS I was going to save some money and use Radio Shack D cells in a battery holder. Some people on here already do that so they can afford fuel

Seriously, I really like it for it's compactness.

Get the adapter at A FINER EDGE MANUFACTURING

The link posted by ruff is incorrect as that kit only comes with 1.5ah batteries.

The proper kit id BDF451 sells for $267 + $6.50 shipping. Great deal for that setup if you shop around. I got it in two days.

Because I needed the drill setup, the upgraded starter really only cost me the price of the custom adapter. I have a Milwaukee cordless that is beat to death.
