what happens with one set of mixing arms if you want to go inverted... does the gyro get reversed???

actually theorectically the coaxial behaves exactly the same way as a conventional helicopter in inverted flight. however, i'm not sure you'll be able to get all that weight above the shaft. then again, from personal experience, you'll be able to get tons of cyclic throw from the system. without tuning it down somewhat you'll get a really responsive helicopter.

Hello again, thanks for the nice posts

Back to building, more pics soon...see the earlier posts for the
differential collective for yaw expalnations. The collecitve
input is detailed there as well.

The machine is actually more maneuverable than a single rotor, and inverted is no problem at all, as the cyclic authority is extremely powerful,
and you gain 14 to 17 percent more power due to lack of tail rotor losses, as well as concomitant aerodynamic efficiency gains, etc....see the earlier white paper on this site.

One customer is using the machine for a DOD research transmorphing uav for payload lifting.

Will see the new fuse and retracts soon at JetPower in Germany, will post pics.

Thanks for the accolades....but...

All I did was polish Mr. Jung's kit...



all the work and credit due is to him....I have seen the retracts, and
they are extraordinary; light, and fully folding and rotating as per
full scale. There will also be a scale cockpit, and even an ejection seat. There will be a working cannon, and rockets that look scale when fired. I will have pics after the JetPower meet.

Coaxial Swashplate Phase Control

Fascinating project!

From my experience with single axis multiblade rotors - phase control on the swashplate can assist with setting links from the swashplate to the blade pitch arms as vertical as possible.

This is easy to accomplish with one swashplate and one set of blades - but I cannot get me head around a coaxial setup whether what works for the bottom blade will also work for the top one - intuitively a plus 20 degree phase setting on the bottom would require a minus 20 degree on the top - but then again the 90 degree gyroscopic progession of the blades with regard to max pitch and max lift - is not intuitive!!!

Can the brainstrust please ponder this - will swashplate phase control work on a coaxial heli - or must you accept the set swashplate movement and adapt the pitch arms to move the blades at the correct quadrant of swashplate movement

The alignment of the two front

pointing blades, directly over one another, ( I use the

blade holder holes) in the shaft fore and aft midline,

and then locking the lower unit

to the shaft gives identical cyclic input

to both rotor planes...no phasing variance needed, as the

correct geometry is machined in, and found through extensive prior

flight testing...there are other designs with non slaved collective

and cyclic, but they add compexity without benefit...


The upper is now slaved to the lower. (A zero-zero set-up....)

This simple method works perfectly, and the symmetrical

nature of the coaxial leads to excellent flight performance,

consistent with the modality on the full size,

(see the preceding white paper).

micheal, how does the tail gyro hook up to the rudder if the gyro only has one output but the yaw requires both the rudder servo and collective to move at the same time? if for yaw, the top rotor needs +2 deg pitch, the bottom needs to have -2 right?

Yaw

It is simply set as a condition, slaved to the
TR servo..


see prior data on site for actual operation(earlier posts) but the


mixer above gives greater changes to the upper head, and


slaved collective compensates such that altitude does not change,


and collective variance is the same, minus or plus the yaw

induced difference...

thank you for the quick reply micheal. i understand how the rudder works. all mixing between the collective and rudder is done on the transmitter right? so if i were to move the rudder stick left, the rudder servo will move the mixer up or down, and the mix from the transmitter will move the collective in the opposite direction. but a gyro can only provide the output for the rudder servo. there will then be two types of rudder action,

1. commanded action from the pilot. the transmitter will handle the mixing to move the collective the other way.

2. automatic action from the gyro. but with the gyro on board the aircraft, how does it perform the mix to the collective?
