e-Electric Conversions > E Pradator?

This is totally off the wall...but...has anyone converted a predator to electric? I have the chance to buy a complete predator already built minus the motor, servos and RX. I just thought it might be interesting to convert it to electric. I already have a predator with a zenoah 23, so this will be a back up machine for the inevitable...well, you know....what goes up must come down. Anyway, don't even know if it is possible...but while the second bird is just sitting there waiting to be picked apart...thought it might make a neat project.

It will be a neat project until you go to buy the battery packs. I fooled around with small electric heli's and though they are neat, the batteries are expensive and require great care. I was using li-po's. If you over charge them they are ruined. If you over discharge them, they are ruined. Not to mention the possibility of fire if you mistreat them.

I've tried both and prefer gas power over electric anyday. Why not try something like a different gas motor? A 4 stroke would be cool.

No doubt you can rig a Predator to fly on electric, but at what expense?

Thanks for all the comments and PM's. I was thinking that it would make a better camera ship than the gasser....all except for the limited flying time. Has anyone rigged up a switch so they can use multiple large batteries...one at a time....similar to the way nascar drivers can switch between ignitions only this would have to be remote.

A Century rep here in Houston converted one for an AP rig. He used a Hacker A16L but can't remember what packs he used. I never saw it fly but he said it was really a nice flying machine.

Cool, thanks guys, I just won the auction on ebay. Bought a Predator Gasser for $305.00 all built including shipping. It of course is missing the engine and electronics...but other than that it is complete. If I don't get around to converting it, I will feel better flying my gasser knowing that I have a complete machine sitting in the garage just waiting for the engine and electronics(which hopefully would survive a crash so I could transfer them). Anyway, I am even more excited now about the project and am leaning towards getting it started right away as soon as the machine arrives. I know that stuff changes every day...so I am up to suggestions as to what I might need for a motor, esc, and battery pack. I plan on running 2 packs with some sort of switch(possibly controlled by a servo) that will allow me to switch batteries while in flight(hopefully doubling my flight time). I probably would swing something in the 700 range for blades, not sure if the machine I bought has the longer tail, if it does I might try swinging the 810-850 range.
