the best fun flys are the ones with no schedule , just a gathering of folks who enjoy being as one and some burgers and soda..

full scale national guard , police, medic, or crop duster helicopters coming in to land for display is also a good thing as well .. thats the way I remember it ..

Fun Fly Demos

I've been to Fun Flies all over the country, and to me there are two types of events. The small gathering of 50 or so pilots with maybe 1or 2 hotshots to make things interesting and the huge Phoenix / IRCHA Jamboree type events where, there are so many people, it is difficult to fly alot anyway.

IMHO if you don't want to sit and watch the Demos then you probably should only attend the very small events. The larger the event, the more hotshots, and more hotshots equals more demos.

With all that said I personally enjoy watching the demos. I think they're motivating and I always find some new move to dream about trying on my helis.

My personal program is simple:
I attend EVERY funfly no-matter WHAT the schedule is, if it is heli orientated. If its planks well snore,yawn,yawn........
If I could attend all over the USA from mo.to mo. I would, but I can not afford to just drop my business and go to every function especially the ones that require airfare etc... its not justified financially.
I will say that when the big boys like CY are there it does make it 100 times more interesting and worth the while to stay and watch, especially nite flying! I dont give a rats butt if a good pilot is a demo or a private individual, if he/she is good then I wanna be there to see it if I can, this is a hobby like any other so get any enjoyment out of it you can, any way it comes along, and enjoy! Why all the seriousness all the time I dont understand some of you guys you act like its life or death, get a life! Its obvious some people have WAY TOO much mula and WAY TOO much spare time on their hands. Just go and have fun for crying out loud. My.02

Demos and invading space!!

I live for the Demos.... To see Jason K or Todd B go to work and not care if they crash is what keeps me in this sport. (Ok I like to fly also) but that is one of the main reasons why I attend Fun Fly's. As far as air space at the Fun Fly's I think from the people I have talked to that there is an unwritten rule, if you fly in other people space and you crash into the person next to you or 3 people down from you, you pay to fix there bird. I.E. I am hovering in front of my self and someone swoops bye backwards inverted and takes out my bird and they are (definitely) in my airspace they pay to fix my bird and vise-versa. If it is on the line or close (again unwritten rule) both parties should be willing to agree that they should just fix there own bird. It all comes down to honesty and being fair. If I am flying and some one comes up behind me and screams bloody murder and I crash I bet (it they were civil honest people) they would say my bad here is my email address email me the damage and I will pay for it.... That type of thing. If I am flying some one else bird (that I asked to fly) and I crash it I will pay to fix it. If some one asks me to fly their bird and it malfunctions I should not be made to pay. If I am hot dogging another persons ship weather they asked me to fly it or not and I pilot error it in to the ground I will pay to fix it (I have done that before) That is (((----MY OPINION----))) on that subject... But that is the norm from what I see.

I was told about the "unwritten rule" also but was told by the same people that in reality it is usually a yelling match. The way I see it, if someone blatantly stays in my airspace and then i go into theirs and they hit me, I am not going to be too willing to pay for it. They were as guilty as I was. If they fly into my airspace and so I fly into theirs then thats basically the same as saying "it takes two to mid-air". "It takes two to mid-air" is the rule at my field. Now if I fly into someone's airspace who was following the rules, sure I'll pay for theirs should something happen. But also, if they fly into my airspace and I do play by the rules the whole flight and they hit me then I'd expect them to pay. Most likely, if someone decides to not play by the rules then I'll do the same and therefore each will be responsible for their own helicopter. Thats the way I look at the whole mess. After about noon at my field you can expect to be sharing the same airspace with one or more aircraft so it doesn't bother me. But in that case, we are standing fairly close and can talk to each other. Thats not the case at the Jamboree. Thats the first time I'd had the luxury of "pilot boxes".

I don't think I had a problem with any of the demo pilots in that regard. They had a larger space in the middle they mostly flew in. There was one guy that seemed to always prefer my spot over his but I just avoided flying in the spots around him. I didn't worry too much about it since i felt pretty cramped in those little boxes myself. What was the deal with the rear limit? I didn't pay much attention to that.

SemiArticulate,
You summed the situation up very well at most all funflys. The thing that always bothered me was if too many helis were flying near the same space it would be hard to hear an eng out, running out of glow etc. Then a quick auto is in order, but if the other helis are noiser and yours isnt producing serious smoke, critical time is spent realizing there is trouble, this happened to me once, has anyone else ever had that happen, its scary...........Thats why I dont like to fly near another heli in the same space. My fear isnt crashing into the other bird, tho it does happen.

My post above was not meant to bash or infer that I didn't like seeing a Demo put on by a really good pilot (sponsered or not) at any FF, or that great 3D pilots should have to have the field to themselves when they fly. I was just saying that I, myself, prefer to go to the more laid back Fun Flys where the skys are not so crowded and the intimidation factor is less, I want to fly at a funFLY and so I find myself choosing to go to smaller events...I find just as much talent, information and chamaradrie as the Supersized Events...and I seem to want to get my lazy butt outta' the lawn-o-lounger and fly more often! I admire and praise (we are not worthy...we are not worthy...) the pilots who can do a great 3D routine (as opposed to a 3F routine) and wow the crowd, I thank them for the inspiration to continue honing my pitifully low skills in hopes of getting better...and I seem to find these people at Fun Flys of all sizes...so for the time being, at least, I like the FUN fun flys... and thats just my person opinion, not a condemnation of Large FF or the Heli Pilots that attend them! The results have stayed stable around 90% for the demos and around 6.5% for no demos with 3.5% that don't care about fun flys.
Being a CD I wanted to have that info. I also think after reading the responses that a balance can be reached that works for everyone.

I'll say one thing about IRCHA, I had a lot of fun. It was my first all helicopter fly-in. Despite knowing that your flights are possibly being watched by world champions and seasoned pros, I was surprised that I didn't feel any intimidation at all. I am pretty sure I didn't impress anyone with my flying but I did get lots of advice and tips and thats why I went. If I wrote them all down I could give Ray's book a run for its money . I'd encourage anyone to go there and fly.

I guess I should say something that is actually on topic. Yes the demos are great, i think its the amount of time and extent that they might infringe on other flying that is the issue. They were not an issue at the Jamboree, you could watch or go fly. There seemed to be room for everyone.
