Similar

I have not used the K&S system but I have a similar system that I have used for a couple of years when practicing by myself. I have an IR LED installed on the model and two self contained 9V IR detectors on the ground with a beeping tone when the model is detected overhead. Sometimes I am shocked by how far away from the flags I actually really am when using the proximity alert, but was thinking I was perfectly centered over them. It does put you over the flags and gives you instant feedback on where you are.

GM1 Tell me more about the system you are using? Home made or for sale??? How much $$$ ?? Any pictures?

Homemade

Mike Goza, Team Miniature Aircraft, made a couple of sets for some friends and they work very well. Mike is a robotics specialist for NASA in Houston and really is a "rocket scientist."

Cool! Any drawings available / for sale ??? How about the vertical range? How high can you go before loosing signal?

I would imagine you get a few metres range with it being IR

Well with the new schedule you better have at least 7 meters range....

Range

Mine work very well up to about 5 meters and on a cloudy day they will go to 7 meters but not on a bright sunshiny day. They are "homemade" with Radio Shack parts. They were not cheap but are worth a lot when practicing alone. Mike did a nice job and I'm glad I have them. If the K&S work as well as mine, they would be worth it for a serious competitor.

Hi Gordie, any info on where we can see like circuit diagrams etc? I'm also an electronic enthusiast and likes to make my own stuff. It'll help much to our team's F3C practice. Many thanks.

BTW, how much does the K&S product costs?

Sorry

I have no information on the design. Like I said, Mike Goza built them for us from his design. Mike works for NASA and is really a sharp guy. You might be able to contact him through Miniature Aircraft as he is a sponsored pilot.

GM1 could I prostrate myself before your greatness and beg a few photos of your setup?

Having some background with circuit design and manufacture I could make some for myself. And as you have a working set it would give me a starting point.

I was initially thinking of having a sending unit on the flag and a reflective surface on the heli. With all the electronics on the ground and only a light reflective tape on the heli. Thus keeping the heli at "competition weight", but that will need a bit of research on my part.

Thanks

Thanks Gordie, will just research for sure there are plenty around the internet. Will look for that IR set-up, and also possibly some designs using hall-effect sensors and china-made laser pointers, which btw are currently very cheap nowadays. But of course, it maybe cheaper (and less headache) to buy the K&S unit than to build one

Hi bigglesbutler, your idea of just the reflective tape on the heli, plus a laser pointer with a sensor on the ground sounds great. Will try to look into that. Thanks!

I don't know if people know this or if it was just me. I had a look at the K&S website and apparently the airborne unit is a infra red LED plugged into the reciever for power. With a recieving unit on the flag, so a much simpler solution to having a reflective surface on the heli.

The problem with my initial idea of all the electronics on the ground is the actual point where you would get a signal woud be tiny. And the Light/Infra red would have to travel twice the distance, ie there AND back.

Pictures

When I get a chance, I will shoot a couple of pictures of Mike's set up and post. It's an airborne IR LED using the rx for power and two 9V detectors sitting on the ground. When the model gets within a 1 ft radius (at eye level above the ground) in a virtual cone above the detector, the siren chirps. It's a real challenge to keep the model over the detector consistently on a windy day.

Well to update you on this topic I can now inform you that me and my flying buddy have bought the K&S flags. They're really working well and boy they help a lot. Didn't know we were so far off the flags. They are not cheap but they've improved our hovering.

Cheers
