Radio - JR & Spektrum DSM > DX7 problem - I'm at a loss!

To understand why when I go into TH or either of the Idle ups that my rudder and aileron trim shifts to the left! I can't find anything in the manual that would explain this. When I switch to TH or either IU the rudder trim movces the same amount to the left but the IU's move the aileron trim only a slight amount compared to the TH. Has anyone seen anything like this? I can't make any sense out of it!

IIRC you can set trim for each flight mode including TH. If you flew the heli in normal mode and setup your trims (say to the right) and then switched to IU1, IU2 and or TH you would have to retrim. If this is not why you are having issues then there is a definite problem.

right on the money, i dont really like this feature, can it be changed so trims stay the same through modes?

This is why you trim your heli to hold a steady hover on a calm day using "Subtrim" and not the trim tabs. This isn't flight mode specific. Use the trim tabs in the front of the radio to dial in for specific daily condition.

If you find that you're adding a lot of subtrim then it's time to reset it mechanically.

Thanks. That's what it was. I don't remember adjusting the trims in any other flight mode but I must have.

I guess it really is important to read a manual cover to cover, although nobody does it!! When I looked in the manual to find the cause of my problem I neglected to check the first introductory sections. On page 13 it talks about the advanced digital trims that are specific to each flight mode!

I wonder what the idea/advantage of trim tabs per flight mode is? I personally find it more difficult to make a fine trim change with this set-up since you have to replicate it at each flight mode.

2 + 2 = 5 for extremely large values of 2.

This is a copy of the A-DTM-2 system that Airtronics created in the late 80's, early 90's time frame. The idea was that you trimmed your machine in the normal mode and as you switched from one flight mode to the other the trims were written forward until each flight mode was trimmed-when you landed and shut off the radio you simply recentered the trims and you were set. The only time that trims get changed from then on was when you needed to in each flight mode, specifically.

Newer radios didn't have all the software features of this system so they opted for the ability to trim in each flight mode individually versus writing the trims forward. The Stylus or Infinity can do it either way. The DX7 has trims in each flight mode. You just need to flip the flight mode switches on the ground with the heli off to see where the trims are for each mode.

If its anything like JR which I beleive it is you will need to trim it in the sub trim for hover, them fine trim i tin each flight mode-Easy!!!!

I was just thinking about that. The only way I can use sub trim on my Swift is if I sub-trim all the functions which would be kind of a pain.

CCPM (his Swift) can be trimmed using sub trim. It's a little more involved since you should add and subtract from all three (AILE, PITCH, ELEV) servos to maintain equal throws in servo travel.

Having said that, I'm in the camp that will mechanically trim out the heli. Although sometimes I get lazy and will wait until after a day of flying and just use trims for the day.

I agree, you should trim mechanically. triming should only be minnor adjustments on each day or flight.

This limited approach to CCPM is starting to show up. As long as you can get to grips with it, there's no issues.
