Is there any chance of building one myself for my homeshop? What is the chance of them being manufactured for homeshop use? It hasn't been that long ago that TIG was out of the question for a homeshop, so what is the odds on water-jet being affordable?

Anythings possible. It would be expensive tho, several parts would have to be OEM. Basic CNC parts tho could be secondary sourced.

You need a pump, a cutting head and a garnet hopper. You also need an XY transport system with servos although steppers will do. Figure on spending about 20K.

OK that's a start. Now where do I start, how do I find the items you mention?

Do a search for Waterjets online. There are a few that make their own pumps and heads like Jet Edge. There are several others as well. It's all a function of how much money you want to spend and how thick your material is going to be.

$20k is way over. You can get into a brand new commercial system for that kind of money. This guy wants to homebrew.

I've never seen commercial systems that low that were worth spitting on and I sell the machines.

Well, maybe if he wants to go into business full time jetting parts for people, he'll want something built to take 24-hour use and backed by a service plan. But if he's like most of us, he can probably do just fine with less.

Although I do appreciate the benefits of the commercial waterjet systems. I think that something has been missed in my post. I only asked

I have only seen these used in shops much larger than I ever aspire to become. But as I also mentioned in my opening

I certainly did not want to be pointed to a web search for commercial systems or criticised for my desire to investigate the future.

Dude, it's a function of buying a pump and a head for around 12-15K. Then once you do that you have to install it on a transport table of some sort, IOW you need to move it around. You can use a system with a belt drive, a rack drive or real ball screws and LM guides. Once you get it on a transport system you will need a motion controller that either uses its own programming system or one that uses G-Codes for motion control. The water has to run somewhere as does the garnet and you will have to figure out how to take care of the run off from the cutting process. You will also need to use some sort of system to mount the parts on that you want to process. There are several types of honey comb material or grating to place the parts on while you jet them with the WJ.

Running a WJ isn't rocket science but RR isn't the place that will teach you about all this. There are plenty of sites that can give you a lot more information than what you can find out here.

Talk is cheap. If you can do it for substantially less why not show us how it's done?
