With the before Xmas pricing I am looking at a Hornet for a micro to replace my Blade CP POS.

I am looking at the X3D. Should I go with the Pro or not?

Go with the pro version.

If you still get weighted CF blades then the standard kit is fine, cheap and light weight.

Here are two video's in this video section. Except the main rotor blades and 27T pinion, one is stock and the other has an Ali head set (most beneficial).

...then I saw this $199 pro deal which does seem good value .

Also get a handful of M2 cap hex bolts (50+ for a $1 with little nuts) from a local hardware store and some way to cut the threads to size for blade grip head bolts that normally get bent easily.

Pro is down to $185 now.

But I did some comparison numbers and Hornet replacement parts are bloody expensive. Do they last better in crashes? I can see a crash in a Hornet being more expensive than a Trex or even larger helis.

Well, look on the bright side, there's a lot less parts to break in the first place

If your really crash happy then stay away, it's not for beginners and the setup can be hard.
But my modified higher head speed brushless CP2 is beginning to cost more to run and I crash it more because I get into more trouble with the motorised tail, trying to do moves that it just isn't ready for, not to mention it's a glitch magnet.

Not that I plan on crashing, but at 2 - 3 times the price for parts, I wonder. I may pick up a Compy 300. Hard to go wrong at $80, and cheap parts.

I never even heard of the Compy 300 until a few days ago so can't really compare. Looks like another SE Asian manufactured +400g belt driven tailed CP2, low head speed 'soft CP' micro. Which could have a place in the fleet if it where closer to 300g but it's no X-3D (as yet).

You watch I'll end up buying one ... 2 yrs from now...

Edit: Here are the parts list prices of all MS micro heli's. 60% are less than $5 and 90% are less than $10, the CF parts are the expensive items where ever.

Let's see:

Part Hornet X3D Pro Compy/Blade HDX300

Main Shaft $7 $.250
Main Gear $9.58 $4.25
Tail Blades $11.63 $2.50 $5.50
Tail Fin $11.63 $3.38
Boom $21.57 $3.38 $4.50
Canopy $10.97 $5.25 $4.50

Other parts are pretty co parable. Ad yes, I know the Pro has carbo fiber parts, but the only part listed that is different between X3D and X3D Pro is the boom.

And of course formum screws up the formating, but I could post the Excel spreadsheet with price comparisons of the 300 sized parts prices.

True, the Main Shaft and Main Gear, MS have no excuses . E036 Tail Blades (plastic) are $3.68 and the Canopy is quite a good one complete with decals. There are lots of little bits you can borrow from other manufactures (cloner's), mix n match to save a few dollars and I have done so.

I look forward to checking out your new Compy300 soon
Remember that this weeks fashionable heli isn't normally the best buy, bugs and heli specific parts.

True, but under a $100 for heli and spares kit is pretty nice.

Hornet does look sharp though.
