Ikaros New Heliman Location: Brooklyn, NY
| Update from Ikaros,
I stopped by the field Saturday - but I think I just missed most of you guys on RR - it took me 45 minutes to actually figure out how to get to the field from Bay 50th st... I drove around the block for a good 30 mins (this was after I ended up crossing the Verazzano Bridge after realizing too late that I missed the Belt Pkw turnoff from the BQE) - btw, have I mentioned I'm not from Brooklyn?
I think I finally figured out how to walk up to the field around 12:30. The original problem was there was a huge congregation of baseball players the first time I drove up, and couldn't actually see the heli field - At least I know where it is now...
Anyway, I got to meet Ed (I believe that was his name) and his family and some other guy I think his name was Charlie? - he was kinda crazy (Charlie, not Ed). I hung out at the field for about an hour and observed several Raptor flights. I didn't feel it appropriate to fly Saturday, as Ed was unfamiliar with me and my posts on RR.
I was suppose to meet Dino on Sunday morning, but he ended up getting sick and couldn't make it - which was ok anyways, because when I got there at 10am it was super windy and deserted.
I think I have mentioned previously, that I am a little bit limited because I am using zipcar for a car - and just like with heli's, it takes practice to learn how to use the service in NY - because the cars are hard to come-by on the weekends. Actually, what I have learned is that you can have up to 5 reservations and as long as you cancel within 6 hours, you get no penalty. So anyway, I have cars reserved for the next 4 weekend mornings. And have one reserved for the entire day for the Spring fun-fly event.
Don't worry... I haven't lost interest in this stuff - to the contrary, I have already started researching nitro birds... That sound is just so awesome...
My 450 has had several park flights (well, hovers). And I must say is amazingly stable, though I still have the flybar weights all the way out. My 500 has still not maidened... Hopefully the weather will cooperate soon!

p.s. Yes I have been glued to the simulator, so that I don't make a fool of myself at the field... How did you guys do this before there were simulators. Much respect!
