Wood.. Thats a nice looking part. What did you use to draw it? I also looked into the taig mills. Who installed the cnc on yours? JR.vibefreak, check with dearmondtool.com, He sells a lot of mills.

ROOTER,

I have been using TURBOCAD version12. To draw stuff up but any cad program will work.

I actually bought the 2019 mill only and put my own stepper motors on it. I also bought and installed a controller board from XYLOTEX. I Use sheetcam to convert the cad file to gcode and turbocnc to run my machine. Its a very steep learning curve if you dont have anybody to show you what to do. I just took it in steps. 1 step at a time! don't think you are going to buy a cnc machine and just make money with it right off the bat. Also you can buy alot of rc part for the price of a mill. And you want to figure for tooling too! You can rack up alot of money in just tool to run a machine. But all in all it sure is something fun to play with.

Woodnack, Thanks for the info. I am not getting into this for a buisness, just for fun then I will see where it goes. I am just really interested in making my own parts. I am looking around 3500.00 for the machine and basic tooling. My biggest fear is getting a lemon mill and fighting problems while learning. I can already run autocad pretty well so thats out of the road. I may look into taig again to lower my cost. How accurate is yours and is there any slop in the mill. Would you buy a taig again if you had to do it over? Thanks rooter

I am very pleased with my taig. I have milled brass, aluminum, wood, fiber, ect... It is very accurate and I think you would be pleased. I looked at sherline but it was just to tiny. Taig is the perfect hobby milling machine. go to www.cartertools.com and look at what people have done with it. I have never regreted getting this mill. $3500 should get you a nice setup. Try looking for a bed that will handle atleast 6X12 inch cutting area. That means the bed is longer then that. I think my bed lenth is around 19" long. But cutting area is 6x12. I can also get up to 50IPM rapid speeds. But most of the time I run it alot slower then that.

Just thought that I'd chime in here... I love my taig. I bought one of the CNC ready ER collet using extended length mills in december of 05 from cartertools.com. I then bought a xylotex cnc kit and mach 3 to run it (by this time I was out ~1400 bucks, not bad at all). I've used it to make BB cannons out of aluminum, molds and plugs for model warship components out of aluminum and machinable wax, electric motor mounts for my buddies, Pumps, etc. Primarily I've cut aluminum, balsa, plywood, UHMW plastic, nylon, and wax but I have a buddy who I believe is using his to mill out 4140 steel. For the cost/size, it is a great mill to own.

Also, if you want to do a lot of wood cutting, people online have made router/dremel attachments for the taig to get to the higher spindle speeds that will really help. The only issue with wood is that the dust can gum up the lead screws if you don't keep an eye on them.
