Thanks DKTek

The fine-tuning is now complete and we are GO for test flight on Sunday
weather permitting...

I have to go to work tomorrow also so no flying for me this Saturday...
and according to the forecast the best weather this weekend should be on Sunday anyway,
here in Sweden

The video cam is in good shape, it has a fully charged battery and a new tape inside

How are ya doin' Perry? Get to fly yet or has bad weather kept you down?

Hi DKTek

The weather was perfect this weekend,
and the XLV was ready to go for its first flight

But when I switched on the camera to get it on tape the #¤%& camera didn’t work !
so I decided to move the testflight forward to next weekend so I have time to get a new video camera

I did test the softstart and checked the rotor rpm though,
and its exactly as I hoped it would be, spot on at 840 rpm
the sound of the motor is very nice
sounds just like a little turbine spooling up

Dang Perry! You mean to say that you had it at flight speed and didn't pull it into a hover? I'm really impressed with your ability to wait for the cam. I thank you for that but ,WOW! I don't think I could've waited.

So, what kind of cam are you getting?

Yes that’s right
It got light on the skids but
I didn’t want to risk flying it without getting it on tape first,
I have learned that the hard way with some smaller helis
and as the checks after the runup revealed,
it was very lucky that it didn’t get airborne as the tail pitch slider had unscrewed itself a bit
this is now corrected and the screws is set with green Locktite !
it will take a blowtorch to get them loose now

So, what kind of cam are you getting?

A cheap one, hehe

no seriously, I haven’t looked at any specific cam yet,
but I try to get a good megapixel type one with the ability to attach a separate and larger microphone so I can capture that sweet, sweeet rotor sound in all it’s glory
It sounds so good just sitting on the ground,
I think its going to sound like a Huey in the air !

The new camera worked great to day

Here is some video from earlier today
http://media.putfile.com/XLV-testflight-1

rotor rpm 860
total flight time today was 22 min
and when charging tonight I put back 8628 mAh in the 9800 mAh 12s accu

Perry, that is awesome man. Sounds like a turbine. 22 minutes and you still had 1/10th left? Very nice. Those blades must really push some air too. Did you get into forward flight or just hang out hovering? Those micro punches look good but I haven't seen any XLV's punch before. Cool.

So, how much did it finally cost you in materials to do the conversion? Time is priceless.

Only hovered it and very, very slow FF getting used to the
feeling of this big bird,
its a lot quicker on the cyclic and pitch then I thought it would be, not a negative thing though, just a pleasant surprise
there is NO lack of power I can tell you that
just ad a little pitch when in hover and the thing punches at a good rate without bogging

The gyro gain needs a little more fine tuning then its time to try some longer punches and some gentle FF with it and see how it reacts when flying forward at higher speeds

I will post more videos as the flight testing continues,
This is only the beginning

Around 2500 USD for the motor, ESC and the 12s accu,
the other bits, motor mount and so on was made from material that I had in my hobby room, say 25 - 30 USD in value

Very nice Perry! I'd figured a bit higher but 2500 works.

I hope to have mine flying soon. I just finished the tail rotor tonight. What is your oppinion on breaking the T/R gears in on the drill press for 1 hour and reshiming? Also, did you fill the gear box or just a coat of grease?

MORE videos PLEASE...

Hi DKTek

There is no need to breaking in the T/R gears, if you assembled the unit right with shims to get the gearplay just right, it just takes some assembling and disassembling and assembling again of the gearbox, feeling the gear mesh so it runs smooth, otherwise the gears will be worn out fast...

Regarding grease, just coat the T/R gears with a heavy coat and then add some in the box, that should do the trick, do not fill it up with grease... and check from time to time that the grease haven’t been thrown of the gears by removing the end plate, its also a good idea to clean out old grease and regrease say every 10 h of flight time, I do this on my Vario Benzin trainer ( same T/R gearbox ) and it runs like a clock, I have over 50 h of flying time on it now without any problems

I will shoot some more vids this weekend, if the weather is good, today there is quite heavy winds here, I hope it gets better on Saturday

Today it was time to try some FF,
High winds all week provided little hope for a testflight this afternoon,
but the winds died out making a perfect weather to do some flying

Testflight 2
http://media.putfile.com/Testflight...my-electric-XLV

Some small glitches at the end of the flight made
the landing a little harder than usual,
but other than that this thing fly’s great
so smooth, and the torque from the Actro 40 motor is so strong that the tail
kicks out then doing punchouts as can be seen in the video

/Perry

I just edited the link, it’s working better now

You need higher rpms on the tail

Either by increasing the headspeed or by changing gears on the tail box.

Yes the landing was a little on the rough side,
but with no power it was the best I could do
As you can hear on my voice the engine cut caught me by surprise and to try and auto that beast from
that height and with the radio going in and out of failsafe on the way down was a very exciting experience I can tell you that

I think I have found the problem with the "glitches" I had last weekend... it may be that I had wrong timing programmed in the esc,
that can apparently give that type of powerloss…

I reprogram the esc and go for another testflight this afternoon, or tomorrow if I can’t find a cameraman today

Awsome job Perry!

So, the ESC caused your glitches? Was the system overly hot or were there any physical signs of trouble?

I'm curious if there's a mechanical link to the glitches...side frames squeaking, T/R drive shaft slipping within it's bearings, whatever metal to metal contact points, etc?

Keep up the great work Perry.

Just curious now, (as I will not order my XLV for a few months) - The Vario manual says not to use Heading lock mode on the Gyro.
What are you doing on your GY401. Do you use Lock or just normal mode?
