e-MS Composit Hornet > Best motor / batt / esc / pinion setup for x-fp

Just got a hornet x-fp for my son. I have an old cc25 to use with it but I don't know what batt / motor to use. I'm used to flying a t-rex on 4s with 3k headspeed but I don't know what to use for fp - certainly the hs is going to be a lot lower.

Also, who's got the best selection of parts? Lot's of trex out there - not much for the hornet ...

Might be better off using the stock brushed Speed300 motor on 3x1000mAh to 3x1320mAh sized packs (~20mins) with a 10A ESC. Will weigh in around 300-320g. The benefits of brushless will be up to a 20% longer flight time and a smoother ride. Have found the Speed300 to high frequency buzz the frame and make it very difficult to dial in a HH gyro, which is advised if you don't have 5 free floating point REVO mix curve capable Tx to suit non standard FP throttle characteristics.

I think the stock speed300 motor (rumoured to be 5000Kv, feels more like 3000kv but only 60% efficient) is geared 180T/10T for a FP hover head speed around 1750 rpm at ~70% stick, so max climb rpm might be 2300+ rpm.

Some more Hornet FP info and links here.

So that's the key really - finding the right hs. On a CP machine hover, climb etc. is about pitch - the hs can vary all over the place depending on the curve, governor, etc. On a FP you hover at one speed, climb at another, etc.

So I should be looking for a max of around 2300 then? If so, then the 3s lipo is the best solution as it can compensate for the crappy efficiency of the brushed motor.

Yes, wack a small 3x1100mAh cell pack and the stock Speed300 setup will be capable of some climbout outdoors. I hear a 2 cell pack will fly but might be too soft on the climbout. The motor does get hot but seems to last for months and is quite cheap to replace anyway. Eventually the brass bush bearing seem to wear causing bad vibrations.
