I am contemplating adding another PM reply option. You would check to NOT move the redundant replied to PM to trash. This would make things more complicated (not good). I need to hear why the new way is unworkable. So far, and once understood, it seems to provide a more productive work flow.
Remember that there are no limits being imposed on PM storage with no arbitrary pruning. The new imposed PM work flow was designed to help avoid imposing PM storage restrictions or any other arbitrary measures.
Clarifications:
Just reading a PM does nothing, except change it's flag color.
Just reading a PM does NOT trash it.
The new functionality comes into play when you reply.
When you reply, your reply is saved in the Sent folder (save copy is checked by default).
When you reply, the original Inbox PM you replied to is moved to trash.
Your saved reply contains a quoted copy of the original Inbox PM that was moved to trash.
When you finish replying your Inbox is empty (nothing left to do).
To review work done go to your Sent folder.
In your Sent folder, as in any folder, there is a number to the right of each member’s name.
Click that number to review all correspondence with that member (includes trash).
In closing, change is hard and I am truly sorry for any inconvenience. Granted, the new PM functionality is like no other. The implementation was conceived based on several factors. House cleaning was one and believe it or not convenience was the other.
