I've never flown a Fai heli, wondering what everyone had to say about what the difference was between an Fai setup and a 3-d setup. Some people have 2 different helis for fai vs 3-d why not just 2 setups. any ideas peeps?

I like fai and 3-d, I used to practice some of the fai maneuvers until I sold or crashed all my choppers and got down to the raptor 30, which is better suited to "freestyle" .

Fai is like the piano. 3-d is jamming on an electric guitar.

you need different instruments to shake the air differently.

two setups does not worketh if you are talking master level fai. but for normal blokes like you and i two setups are fine, just bias the machine towards what you want to do more of and go practice the piss out of FAI schedule of maneuvers.

Indeed the radio can be set up for multiple discplines on the same machine, but there's also some mechanical differences on FAI vs. 3D helicopters....

models set up for 3D usually have lighter paddles to increase cyclic rate, while FAI models usually are better with some heavier paddles to increase hovering precision since the F3C schedules have lots of points on the hovering maneuvers.

Again, since the pros who compete usually differ in scores by a few measly points, it really matters to them to pull out all the stops to make sure their models don't let them down.

So for us mortals... I'm sure you can acheive a fairly good balance on the same model to do both 3D and FAI (which I prefer as well).

...and my flying is like banging away on a tambourine, out of time, somewhere in the corner of the stage.

Nice analogy, though.
