Besides using the Bosch purple grease in the tail. Does anyone use it
to repack bearings? or is there something better?

That is a very good grease with a very high "drop point" used for aircraft magnetos and it should work great in all areas.

I like the stuff, but was a bit hard to find. I went to a specialty tool supply center that handles Bosch tools. They showed me a huge air hammer that uses this in the bearings. If it is used for this environment then it should work for us. A bit expensive at $14 for 225ml tube but that should last me a long time.

Bosch Grease

No Dave,

My Milli came with a tiny black tube of whitish/yellow mystery grease.

You can still buy the 45ml tube from Ron Lund (S1314) for $8.71.

I'm thinking that big tube for $14.00 is a much better deal.

Where was that at?

Can anyone tell me what "drop-point" means?

"Drop point" is the temperature at which the grease starts to drip (or "drop off"). In our application it means that at high operating temp The grease stays put. Even the main rotor bearings get quite warm while flying and the TR shaft bearings or anything that is operating at a high fraction of engine RPM can benifit

Guys,

I recieved my Bosch Grease yesterday per Carps suggestion. It's rather confusing but the grease is not purple. It's a translucent yellowish grease but there is a sticker on the box that says Purple Grease.

Does any know whether this is the replacement grease to that of the purple grease that we know?

Ray Hostetler, the nice guy he is, is sending me a dab of his purple grease so that I can compare consistency.

I'll let you know what I find...

Thanks,
Raz

If you can't find the purple grease, here are some alternatives:

Slick 50 One Grease- perfect for the tail gears. This is the only stuff that I have ever found that actually stays in the gears after many hours of flying. All of the other stuff, including the Bosch would be covering the sides of the tail box with very little remaining on the gears after about 50 flights.

*** side note, do not use this to repack bearings. It has small particles in it that is perfect for the gears in the tail box, but not for precision bearings***

Motul Tech Grease 300- simply the best grease for thrust bearings, repacking radial bearings and especially for o-ring dampers/spindles.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Guys,

These suggestions could certainly come in handy.

I was able to compare. The translucent yellowish grease labeled Purple grease feels slicker than the purple colored grease. I'm sending a sample to Ray to get his opinion as well.

What I'm thinking here, the new yellowish grease is the new formulated purple grease.

Thanks,
Raz
