i was flying my axe cp on my back yard, every thing was right until a sudden wind hit the helicopter (was hover right in front of me at 2 feet high and tree feet away) the helicopter just hit me on my &$%$ and i really feel a real pain on the nuts, 2 weeks and still the pain, some one need a hundred pieces of axe cp,

I finnished assembling a GP 1/3 Christian Eagle, fitted with a DA50 and swinging a mejslik 22x10 prop. Was setting the throws on all surfaces including the throttle. The throttle was the one that caught me out! The spring return was not strong enough to pull the servo back to the Idle position when the radio was switched off and also the carb being rear mounted I could not view the position of the butterfly. Anyway I found the motor rather difficult to start but persisted when finally It came to life almost FULL THROTTLE I had my left hand holding the top wing and with my right reached down to transmitter to back the throttle off which Increased It. I paniced tried to reach around the prop to hit the kill switch, I could not see the prop. I received several deep cuts narrowly missing veins on the under side of my arm.A total of seventeen stitches and a skin graft where the skin died. A wake up call that I really needed which I really mean "I NEEDED" I had been too care free for too long. Now I treat all powered models with the greatest respect. I still come across people that consider planes and helis TOYS! I show them my right arm and ask what sort of toy do you think did that? Needless to say their the ones that say there no longer a toy!

Worst I have probably had was my blade cp pro running into my shoulder. I was hover it in front of me a ways away and wind changed blew right at me and smack into my shoulder the main blades went. It hurt bad said some bad words but then kept flying and those were carbon fiber blades so yea ouch but was on just a bit of pain and a few red marks.

I wanted to add I have also burned myself but not bad at all. But thats not really what I wanted to add what I wanted to add was how I had a real close call. See I was hovering my Hawk Pro 30 size in front of me or to side and well I was at a flying field and my step dad was flying his planes well I heard him yell looked back thought he was landing or he was not sure so first thing I did was pull heli out of way or tryed and well when I looked away for a sec got to stop that lol it went back and was right next to me almost so when I pulled it before looking or same time as looking it came at me or towards me was what felt like a few inches away from my head but probably more just scared me so bad.

well i learnt something today from this thread, the idea of starting heli in throttle hold; great idea i will adpot from now on.

Quite a few years ago i was tuning an engine in the garden prior to meeting my mate at the flying field and got caught by both main blades causing two nasty cuts across the top of my right wrist.

When i explained to my mate why I was late and showed him the wounds [about 3 inches apart] his comment was "mmm see how much your tracking was out" !!!

just recently very lucky

I am on my 4th heli...i have had a CX2...a Blade CP......a CP PRO....my new fleet is an AXE CP and a MX400 PRO-both by HeliMax..so I do have about 6 months under my belt of constant repairs on all the above..

I had installed some taining blades ( yeah, I still need them)on the AXE CP, and neglected to loc-tite the feathering shaft..well, the allen bolt worked loose and both heavy training blades shot out in opposite directions INCREDIBULY FAST...i would have had no time to react as i was only about 10 ft away in a low hover ..

both blades shot out perfectly straight, and one missed my chest by 4 feet.

thats why my nickname has always been 'Lucky"

moral of the story- tighten your nuts

Bad RC Plank Accident

My very first day if flying RC helicopters, i had a friend of mine test hover it to make sure that everything was ok. He has also brought a 80" edge with a DA50. We both flew all day and i was walking back to the pitts with my heli and at that second i noticed my friend starting his airplane with no help, and it wasnt tied down( he just had his left hand on the "right" wing of the airplane flipping the prop). an instant later the plane started at full power and because he was holding it with his left hand the plane pivoted towards his arm and the prop went to work right at the elbow joint. the plane died after taking his arm off(seperatin the joint), and was only attached by the skin where his tricep was.

Luckily there was about 5 of us there at the field at the time (late afternoon) and we got him medivac'd(in a huey of all things) to the nearest hospital in 15 mins. after countless hours in the O.R. they were able to reattach him arm.

A surgical miracle saved his arm and i beleive he got about 90% or better use out of it. Please please please double check things, because it really could cost you your life. He would have been dead in 15 mins.

Back in October 2004 whilst learning to fly my raptor 30, I was bringing the model down and backwards towards me when I applied forward cyclic to slow the model down. Nothing happened....

As with a car without brakes, things seemed to accelerate just before impact. As the model was then about waist high and close, all I could do was turn my back on it, letting my body warmer take first hit but as the model swung around the main blades hit my right hand holding onto the transmitter and then my left forearm.

All things considered I was lucky to have only lost the tip of my little finger and surgeons were able to repair my ring finger which had been 75% severed. Bruising was present on my left inside forearm from wrist to elbow and a horizontal bruise to my right back. Surprisingly there was no pain at any time either on impact or through 2 operations and recovery.

Thinking about it now there was considerable pain in making the necessary 3 phone calls to the wife exposing a bit more of the injuries and hoping this would suffice as to why I was then 2 hours late in taking her out shopping and having to stay in hospital for surgery.

An examination of the tx revealed a failed cell in the battery. The equipment was then 3 months old and had been fully charged the night before.

RC HELI INJURY VIDEO WARNING VERY GRAPHIC!

Here is a link below that appeared on the internet recently depicting a leg injury to a young rc heli modeller. I post it as it might just make help people appreciate the damage that can be done by our favourite 'toys'.

Make no mistake it is a video taken just after the accident and is not for the sqeamish but a useful lesson if you can bear to watch it.

I don't have details of the accident other then it is UK somewhere.
I can see many times when this could have happened to me whilst adjusting carb settings or slowing the blades...respect to the machines!

i was standing next to a frind and he did a loop with his trex 450 and go confused and it came for us, it to skin of my wrist, i still have scar and cut him prety deep, but we save most of the helicopter

Way back in the day i managed to get confused flying towards myself and my friend with an R50 heh.

The headspeed was only around 1,000 as i liked it around there at the time, but I eventually pulled out to the left heh.

I've always been very cautious when flying towards myself ever since

Never going to bring my chaos down low infront of me like some of thoes pros though :O

I have recently had a very serious injury as a result of a bad decision to hover my T-rex 600 in the driveway at my office. Although I have flown it dozens of times there to dial it in, you just never know when something may go horribly wrong. Upon inspection after the accident, I found a snapped ball joint connector which may have caused the loss of control. The result of the accident is 3 severed fingers on my right hand. My thumb and middle finger were still partially attached, but my index finger was only held on by a piece of skin. Don't know how much movement I will have after surgeries but I am hopeful to be back flying in 90 days or less...The pics in my gallery were taken right after the reattachment surgery. I will post new ones as rehab progresses. Grateful to be in one piece!!!

MY worst accident so far...

I just recently purchased a 4ch rc helicopter (esky's honeybee).
OK, when i plugged in the battery and turnd on the transmitter everything started fine. Also, i held it by my thumb and my index on the carbonfiber rod ( the thing that connects the tail rotor to the main rotor). THe mistake happned when i turned off my transmitter first. THe rotters spun at full speed cutting the back side of my forearm. I got 6 slashes but it was just broosed with red lines and dots of blood. JUst imajine if i had carbon fiber blades. Luckly i had plastic blades. I would have gotten atleast 8 stiches on my arm if it was carbon fiber. My advice would be to keep the trottle on on minimal speed and disconnet the battery first before doing anything..

Index finger damaged

Cut my index finger while checking tracking by holding a size 400 heli by the boom. Accidentally flipped the throttle stick down too fast and it was at Idle up 1. The negative pitch caused the heli to suddenly go down and that bit me. Now I cannot fully bend my index finger. Must have cut off a tandon or something.

Puffs...goes the Lipo.

I force myself to come through here and read this and other threads in the Safety forum just to scare the crap out of myself. I get a little paranoid about things but I think that your posts here are helping me be a safer pilot and hopefully I will follow safe guidelines to reduce chances of injuring myself or even worse someone else.

Your stories and suggestions have helped me get a routine going when I fly, and I'm basically at the point now where I'm a bit freaked out if -anyone- besides a friend/spotter who is watching me fly is within 500 (or a million) feet of me, mostly because I would hate for something to go wrong and me lose the ability to control it, and then it go off by itself and hurt someone.

Gah. Well, I wish healing on all of you who have scares and wounds.
