oh yeah, just remembered this one too:

when i was still flying my honeybee, i had bought some new carbon fiber blades, and decided to hold the chopper by the tail boom, well, those blades hit my hand, black and blue hand and fingers for a week. still have a scar where the flesh tore loose too.

I only know of one death by a RC Heli... I know some people mention it in a plural sense so what other deaths has there been?

I know of two. Ron and a child in Japan. A pilot was giving a demo for "science day" I believe. Had a PCM lockout and the heli flew into the stands where the kids were. Really unfortunately. If I recall correctly, he's serving life for involuntary manslaughter. I believe the thread is here on RR somewhere...

Nothing to serious

have happened to me yet (knock on wood)

Got hit on my right arm once by a walkera 40 when it spooled up on a table (Stupid thing to do)

And then I got my thumb cut up by the tail blades on my T-Rex 450X got a 2 cm long scar on my left thumb and about 4mm wide.
(The tail had acted wired the last flight so I check It. Spooled it up (idle up) and grabbed the tail and then I felt blood spraying all over my face. Hit throttlehold and turned all off went up and patched my self up again. Did not feel any Payne for about 5 minutes then all hell broke loose dam that hurt. And it broke the whole tail chase on my T-Rex450X)

Luckily I have gotten mouth wiser sins then. Got a lot more respect for helies after I almost where hit by a piece of a wooden main blade from my raptor 50v2. I am new to helies and got the best pilot at my field to test my rappy. When he where landing (idle up) the gyro failed and the heli did not react ( read more about that here http://www.runryder.com/helicopter/t285584p1/ ) it hit the ground and sprayed some parts. In a split second I felt like a hard wind blowing on the left side of my face. Did not think moutch of it (I where whining over my rappy) but another pilot sees the piece of the blade fly past my face really extreme close

I had a small burn on my leg from the muffler, After my flight I killed the motor, stopped the blades, picked it up and started walking back to charge. It did the little rotate and brushed the motor on my calf and burned the sh!t out of it. It didn't even blister, just turned the skin white. Now I carry the heli with the muffler on the opposite side of my body. Not a serious burn but it definately let me know it was there.

In God we trust, everyone else we monitor.

buddy of mine almost circumsized ( Jewish style )

my buddy was sitting on the back of his car, holding his electric fomie plane between his legs with the engine and prop jamed up into his groin, to stabliize it while he plugge in his lipo battery. I made a comment about him wanting to become Jewish real quick. ouch he never did that again.

Not a heli injury but it still hurts :(

I got hit on one of my fingers to day while starting up my corsair the engine back fired and the back side of the propel hit my middle finger (just don’t know what that finger is called on Eng sorry)

Damn I got cut up good and the blood just came coming when I got the bleeding to stop the cut it self wasn’t all that bad. As I thought about 1.5 cm long cut but deep rely deep and hurts quite a bit.
At first I just could not stop thinking that it locked like a bad horror movie with all the blood in the bottom of my sink

I am fine now and just need to what’s after infection the next few days. Did not go to my doctor just stopped the bleeding and cleaned the cut dont think it is all that bad.

Hope you all have better luck with your helis/planes than I did to day

Tomorrow ill stick to flying my t-rex 450x

I break I buy I am learning to fly :p

and I am sure it does hurt.. You know men are the biggest babies when it comes to pain and whining.. we need to start a topic just for whining.. that way we dont have to whine to our wives which usually ends up in a conversation of "why dont you just find another hobby".... However, in all fairness.. My wife now is interested in flying .. she is one of my topics that I started so I dont hear the get out anymore.. just the GROW UP and TAKE IT LIKE A MAN....

Plane, not heli

Check out my gallery to see what I did to my finger while helping a friend tune an OS 40FP about 10 years ago. $16,000 and several surgeries, including skin grafts, I have 95% function of my finger back.

Hi all

Damn man that looks nasty Tyler
What happened? Did you actually hit the propel with your finger while it where running full speed?
It must have hurt like hell and then some.

As of now I think planes are a bit scary to start up and got a shock
to day when I started it up again and the prop started turning
So maybe I can ask you all here if I can start my ASP 61 with my robbe 120 starter
I would like to not use my fingers again for the start up. Never had a problem starting up my Raptor

Yep!!

Wasn't careful enough reaching for the high speed needle at full bore!!

Stripped it clean to the bone, nicked both tendons on top of my knuckle. Over 100 stitches. Still hurts to this day. Tip of my thumb didn't take the skin graft, so they cut it back off again. You don't realize how much that little bit of padding on your finger tips pads the tip of your bone until it is missing. I regularly tap something and my bone goes "thud", and it hurts like the dickens.

Funny thing is that about a year after I healed, someone asked me how much money I made on the deal by sueing the other guy. The thought of sueing never even entered my mind. My health insurance covered it, so that was all I was worried about. Greedy people!!

Hi Tyler.

Sorry for the late reply.

Rely sad to reed what happened to you and how much pain it cost you
Now a bit about pain I have it every day in my knees and my right wrist. (Got bad joints. And yet again I can’t explain it properly on eng sorry)

Oki must admit that when I where tuning in my Asp 61 4 stroke I where a bid scared to reach out to the high speed needle. But the second time I did not even think about the change on getting my fingers cut on the propel. Then when I started it op again and it backfired and hit/cut my finger (it’s healing just fine by the way) it gave a bit to think about.
But after reading what happened to you I must admit that I rely don’t like having my fingers any where near the propel when the engine is running

”sueing the other guy”
Thank god you did not sue (is sue right?) the other pilot for the accident. If that started to happen I don’t think there would be any other pilots willing to help etch other any more just at the risk of getting sued. I am still a beginner so I am properly the one getting the most help but have help others as well when I can.
When I help I know there is a risk of getting burned, cut etc.
This is just a part of the hobby and that’s why safety is something worth thinking about every time we go flying.

Have asked once if I can use a robbe 120 starter to start my asp 61 4 stroke but got no answer would not like to get hit again by the propel while starting it.

I break I buy I am learning to fly :p

Me a long time ago had a face full of hirobo shuttle, main blade struck forehead made a nice gash and the the paddle made a nice gash on top of my head, trip to the hospital only 5 min away luckly, a bunch of stiches, had a plastic surgeon do the job,a whole lot wiser now, never never look at a picture in a book ( Dieter Schluter's first book and that model was a Graupner Bell 47) and do the same thing, adjust the needle valve, also Kavan's manuel had an individual holding the tail boom doing a blade tracking. How Dangerous these machines really are..........................

it's time to kick the skids and light the fire's

Cut off my index finger!

Back in 1984 I had a .60 Champion that had radio and gyro problems. I hooked the tail rotor servo up direct by-passing the gyro to try and find the problem. I was kneeling behind the model holding the tail boom with one hand while advancing the throttle with the other. I was under half stick so it wouldn't fly and was observing the tail rotor acting up. All of a sudden the radio glitched and the heli went to full throttle with me holding on to the tail boom. The heli was standing on it's tail over my head! One second later it was back down hitting the ground on the front right skid. When this happened the wooden blades that I had fiber-glassed and painted hit my right index fingers knuckle and the tail boom that it once had a hold of! It felt like I had a hold of a chicken with it's head cut off flopping around in front of me. When I looked down at what was left of my helicopter, I reached over to pinch off the fuel line to kill the engine when I noticed I no longer had a finger! It was hanging on by a piece of skin. I had two surgeries to put my finger back on and have about 80% use of my finger. I was very stupid and learned the hard way. It could have been my neck or head!!! I got out of this sport for many years and sold everything off. I got the bug again about ten years ago and have been very safe. I hope everyone can learn from my story and keep our hobby as safe as possible.
