Avant Aurora - EFX - FX > "Aurora: Tail Gear system questions"

Hello!

Why has Augusto opted for a tail gear system with bevel wheels? (picture below). What are the advantages?

That same type of system is on the Hirobo helis(where design cue was taken from) and it seems to work just fine, so why fix what isn't broken? Also, it is very easy to convert to a belt tail drive in the future with barely any extra manufacturing work or extra designing.

At least the pinion won’t climb or flex the crown gear. A far more captive environment like this I would think.

Three reasons.

1) It's extremely smooth.
2) it can take more abuse than a crown gear because there is no flexing or climbing.
3) It allows for a future belt drive if wanted.

A lot of people were very surprised to see that after Alan's crash at IRCHA and the long funky chicken all the gears were in perfect shape. Before witnessing that most didn't realize that that system was so rugged.

Let's not let the obvious reason for all that to go unnoticed, The beveled gear offers a lot more surface area for the teeth to contact, the smoothness and ruggedness are simply the result of the more contact area.

I'm in Alberta Canada Augusto, any idea if you will have a Canadain dealer? I was very close to ordering an origional Avant kit for my X-Spec but held off. The Aurora looks to be what I was waiting for. Sure love to see them here in Canada.

Yes we are working on dealerships for all countries.
One of the main requirement is for the dealer to commit to have a sizable stock of parts at all times to support the customers otherwise we are not interested in having those unsuported sales.

You gotta LOVE this AUGUSTO guy!

Always thinking about the next phase and assuring that these upgrades are incorporated and compatible with future upgrades.

(Elec, Gasser(?)) and hopping for a 50size maybe?

As quoted from Augusto back in the beginning of July

"It takes a lot of time, effort and a huge investment to get a new model out but we will certainly explore the possibility of a 50-sized native Avant in a couple of years."

So, one day in the future probably.

BTW, JKOS already has an E-Avant.

The crown gear - bevel gear arrangment is dependent on having the crown gear rigid enough not to flex down away from the pinion gear as the original Furys and Vigors could do, and it requires very careful shimming of the main shaft to get the gear mesh tight enough. Additionally, if the collars holding the main shaft move and allow up-down play in the mast the crown gear arrangement will either loosen the mesh or tighten the mesh, neither of which is good.

The Hirobo/Raptor 90 and now Aurora arrangement allows the mesh between the main tail drive gear and the pinion gear to be set by the designer via sideframe hole position which translates into much less time needed to build properly and no worry about performance.

Think about how one never hears of Hirobos or Raptor 90s having tail issues, but over the years how many tail issues have appeared for Furys, Vigor, Predators, etc.

There are very few new ideas in models any more. Just compilations of previous items. Augusto took the best ideas out there and put them all together.

Thank you very much for all the postings. Now it is clear to me why Augusto uses a bevel gear arrangment.

Another question: What are the reasons for not preferring a helical gearing? The Henseleit MP uses one. It is more quiet.

Because the helical gears depite being quiet they have the problem that they apply a component of the force that's perpendicular to the gear main plane making the gear hubs prone to fatigue due to repetitive flexing form that force component.

Augusto is right. Not to mention that helical and spirial cut gears take more HP to turn due to increase in friction, but they are stronger tooth design for shear load on the teeth. And alot more picky on the backlash in the set up of the gears.
