I've been getting asked more and more for pictures of my electric Avant. Well, I finally took a few and here they are. This setup is SWEET! It has more power than 90 nitro and weighs only 10 lbs 5 oz as you see it with the canopy on and ready to fly.

It only took two parts to do the conversion as seen in the last two photos. After we knew it worked, I replaced the aluminum side pieces with the original carbon fiber pieces as seen in rest of the pictures.

Setup synopsis:
Schulze 40.160H
Actro 32-3H
Thunder Power 10S4P 5300 Pro Lite
Medusa Research MBEC

Enjoy,
John

> that is a huge freakin' ESC!!!

Yeah, and it weighs a lot more than most other ESCs too. I was running a Schulze 32.55k for many flights but it thermaled on me on a hot summer day, so I decided to play it safe and go up to this monster. The reduced on resistance of the 40.160H actually gets me a higher power to weight ratio despite the increase in weight of about 5 oz over the 32.55k.

> what are your flight times?

I've been taking it quite easy on the batteries by only flying 6-6.5 mins. I could go 7-7.5 mins and still be at the 80% discharge mark. I'm still collecting data with the new ESC so these numbers could change a bit.

So....

The CAD drawings of those parts are where?

I'm sure I can whip up my own, but if you had them laying around...

Seriously, this is excellent work. I was one of the ones bugging you about it and I'm even more interested now that I see pictures.

You should look into having a CNC shop turn some out for you, I bet a lot of people would be interested in this. It looks like a very easy conversion. I would be ecstatic to never deal with a fuel pump, plumbing, clunk line, header tank, starter, oil wipe-down, etc.

So how's the flight characteristics? With the batteries down low, is it pretty close to that of the Avant with the engine or does it actually lower the CG of the bird?

Man, the gears are turning now...

Thanks for the pics, John. That sequence belongs in Playboy -- possibly the finest 90-sized heli available, and with a simple custom e-conversion. The front of my shirt is soaked with drool and it's all yours (and Augusto's) fault.

It actually raises the CG. It does everything faster than it did as a nitro at the same headspeed and identical pitch/cyclic setttings. The guys in Albuquerque who got to see it fly before and after the conversion couldn't believe the increase in cylic and collective authority after the conversion. I didn't touch that part of the setup.

> The CAD drawings of those parts are where?

There are no drawings, unfortunately. The pieces were made by hand with a manual milling machine.

This is how my flying ended two days ago...

> Whoa, mustve went in hard.

Oops, sorry to mislead. The heli didn't go in at all. The shaft broke in flight and I auto'ed it down safely.

> What pinion is that?

That is a Mikado 10-tooth module 1.0 pinion. Mikado pinions are great.

Thanks for all the info JKos,

by the way, any ideas as to why the shaft broke in flight?

Thanks!
