So I'm sure that not too many people are buying these nowadays, but one of them came up in the classifieds and I figured it would be a nice way to learn big helis, plus, it was pretty cheap being old and all.

This thing is fairly stock but it's got a stretched boom and some 470 carbon blades.

One thing I noticed (I have not flown it yet) is that it seems fairly tail heavy. Are you guys adding noseweight, or trimming out the difference? thanks,

trashmanf

Hi,

I balance mine by using a 10 cell NiMh pack and shift the battery pack further forward. Balances out nicely and is very stable in hover (still learning). I use thick elastic bands wrapped around the battery to stop it sliding out of the battery grips and leave either the front or the rear on all the time so that I keep the same balance point.

Have fun!

Congratulations! You'll have fun with the VE It's a good relaxing heli to fly. Like you said, it's an old design and shouldn't be expected to be in the same catagory as the new 3D designs. Your picture looks like a 10 cell battery pack and I flew with one of those also till I got my lipos. You'll need to slide the pack way forward to get it close to balanced, but it can be done. Once again, congratulations and enjoy.

thanks, that's a good idea and I have some 4200 packs from my high power sailplanes that should work perfect.

another thing that I noticed while setting up the radio was that, the tail has a LOT of slop from where the lever meets up with the pitch slider! I'm going to try to hover it anyways, but, is this normal?

the rest of the radio setup went pretty good, considering, it's got a walkera gyro on it and I haven't tried to goof with that yet.

I use a 3 cell 2 pack lipo that is stacked on top of each other on mine. I put it as far forward as I can. It is about even with the front of the canopy.
I would also work on the slop in the tail befor putting it in the air.

thanks for the tips guys

I'll try and fix that tail pitch slider. not sure how, but I will try!!!

I realize this isnt going to be crazy 3D but it should be a nice heli to hover and fly some circuits. that pack on there is a looooong 3s Tanic pack, I wish it was stacked on top of itself so I could balance it easier, but oh well.

i'll let you guys know how I do, I probably want to try it this weekend!

well, I tried to fly it, it spun up pretty good, but the tail rotor wouldn't control. I think it might be the settings on the WALKERA gyro... that I'll have to figure out. maybe, I was running it at too high of a headspeed and that caused it to spin out? I will try it a little slower, but it was having some trouble getting off the ground, I think that this is a very heavy helicopter.

Flight Report!

It flew great!

I really need some upgraded tail parts, the slop made it way too hard to control the tail. i swapped out the walkera gyro for my 401 and that helped, but the slop was still too bad. the rest of the heli was vibe free and smooth!

One thing that was different from my other helis, was that it took a lot of collective to get it off the ground. Once I got it hovering though, I had to bring the collective WAY down and even then it still kept wanting to fly, it was strange.

Is this because the big heavy blades keep momentum and they require a lot of control input to pitch them back down once they're pitched up?

anyways, this is a call to all that may have some upgraded Voyager E tail parts (or just good stock ones) that want to sell them! Thank you !!!

stock works fine; I have two V's. if the slider is worn replace it. keep it oiled, balance the heli on the shaft; move the battery as far forward as possible to do this. Heli will fly much easer if balanced on the shaft.

Unfortunately I think we lost another VE flier. Didn't take long for him to give up on it either. I don't blame him, the bird is too old.

Agree, is quite old - and even with all the upgrades you can imagine, it still does not quite reach the level of some of the new ones, BUT as it flyes so stable, and has got a few excellent scale upgrades (e.g. Bell 230), why don't we try that ?

I agree with your comments xircom. I would dearly love to put a 230 on my VE. I'm currently flying with a Schweizer body. RC-Heli mag said JR was going to release the 230 here in the states, but I haven't seen a thing about it yet. The exchange rate would kill me to buy overseas.

Will a highly upgraded VE perform some basic 3D maneuvers. This is the VE I am talking about:

trashmanf,

A VE was my first heli. She's very good for that, as she's stable as hell, flies in the wind, and will teach you all the upright attitude controls in time. Parts are not cheap, though

She won't teach you aerobatics, because she can't do any. So if this is your bent, you have to look to your 2nd heli for that.

For a first teacher, though, she's great! I have no regrets.

Pyrock,

The answer is, to be brutally honest, "no."

If you strap on the Quick head, you can do loops and rolls and stall turns and flips up high, given you have the upgrade brushless motor and corresponding LiPo pack..

Unfortunately, you will not be able to use these on another larger heli to my knowledge, so when you are ready to begin your serious aerobatics career, I suggest you get a different heli - don't put more $$ into VE.

Why do I say this? Because I tried "more $$ into VE," and it is money down the drain if 3D is your objective.
