Avant Aurora - EFX - FX > Avant and FAI ???

I'm in the market for a new heli and have looked at several of the more common FAI machines (xcell, hirobo etc.). The engineering of the Avant line has caught my attention and I'm wondering if anyone flies them in FAI?

I don't contest fly anymore but like that form of flying vs. hard 3D.......guess my age is catching up with me. I'd like a machine that hovers with the best of the current FAI machines AND also flies like it's on rails in forward flight.

I'm more interested in hearing from those that have done it or seen it done.

There is a post here on RR about some people using the Avant for FAI flying due to it's slim profile into the wind. I don't see why it couldn't be used for fai flying. I think Augusto has more details.

with Avant Programable Head you can setup your heli to ultra stable to super active.

I dont see any reason why this machine cannot be use in FAI flying style

I intend to use the Aurora for FAI. There's FAI setting for the programmable rotorhead. It should fly well when combined with a good pair of paddles and main blade.

Per my review of the Avant line, I would agree that it "should" be "possible" to perform FAI. I'd just like to know that more than one out there is having success with this type of flying before investing 2-3 thousand dollars.

If anyone has any field experience with the machine for this type of flying, I'm all ears.

Well, I have flown FAI for a good number of years. I also fly the Avant. I have not flown the Avant in FAI, although you could. There are machines better suited to FAI than the Avant. The bell cranks are set up for 3D type throw and the light weight makes it very responsive. Having said that, the machine hovers extremely well despite those things. You could fly the Avant in contests just fine. I don't think you are going to beat a lot of good pilots with Eagles or Calipers. If I flew the Avant in FAI, I would put a pound and a half of lead in the skids too.
