I'm a little confused as well, the check valve is the silver thing that comes from the backplate. The plugged line seems to me like a vent line to relieve pressure, but wouldn't unplugging at the checkvalve do the same thing?

yes it does. In fact if you want to have less clutter in the plumbing you can do just that.
