e-Lite Machines Corona > Convert to motor driven tail

Anyone know of any projects where a Corona (or any other heli) has been converted to a motor tail (ie, not driven from the main shaft?) Most of my mishaps seem to result in damage to the tail drive system, and it does get wonky sometimes anyway, since it is not driven fast enough with the stock setup, and hiccups when you throttle up or down.

Seems like a fixed-pitch, motor driven tail would solve that, and let you mount the boom however and whereever you want. The Eco 7 is a similar size heli that uses this system, and the videos I've seen show it working well.

I'm thinking all you need is a small brushed motor, brushed ESC, and appropriate prop (plus whatever hardware necessary to mount).

Any thoughts?

Did you ever see how squirelly an Eflite Blade CP is with a motor driven tail ?? I know it's a very small helicopter, but the tail is very unsteady.

I would imagine that it would actually less squirelly if you kept the tail collective pitch but made it driven by a motor at a fixed speed. I would go for a small outrunner cd-rom type of brushless motor. When using a brushed motor you need to use a geared system like the eco-7 which can strip if you hit the ground with the tail to hard but the brushless outrunner could be direct drive.

I perform precision manuevers called crashes.

Thanks for the responses. Yes, I even had a Blade CP, but its problems seemed to be a funnction of a non-heading hold gyro and a tiny tail motor that burned out a lot.

I like the idea of constant speed from a separate motor (although I'm not sure how that would be implemented other than to drive the existing right-angle drive somewhere).

From doing some more research, it seems that if you converted to 2 motors with a fixed pitch tail, you need some kind of revo mixing in your radio to bring up the tail motor speed with the main rotor speed. I had kind of thought the gyro would do whatever it took to bring up the tail rotor to speed, but I guess it only works for fine-tuning the speed. Or something.

If you have a HH you dont have to set revo mixing.
If you can find a 4D prop, with nearly no play, from a shockflyer it should be easy to achief your goal.

I was wondering about the 4D set up on a Corona also! That would be cool. No cash to play with.....somebody go for it ....please?
