e-Lite Machines Corona > New 401 gyro...now the tail is doing some serious wagging!

This is so frustrating. Doesn't seem like anything I do effects the serious wag. When a bit of a breeze hits the tail, it starts jerking back and forth...you can see the servo arm going back and forth, back and forth. Does anyone have a cure? I'm using a Futaba 7cap TX and have the AVCS set up on Ch5. Can I actually set the gain of the servo here or is it simply on or off.... HH or not?

Read the Futaba manul on page 72. http://www.futaba-rc.com/manuals/7c-manual.pdf

I think you need to open the GYRO function, change gyro type to heading-hold and then adjust gyro rate to 70% -- as a starting point.

Part of the problem is that there seems to be a disagreement among some when it comes to the FP Corona. Some say fly in standard mode, some say set up in Heli mode. Some say always use HH. Some say never use it. Currently I have Ch5 switch set up for HH/Standard, and have lowered the End Point settings to 50%. That made a big difference. I guess the question is to leave the TX in its current mode and continue fooling with the end point settings, or switch to heli mode and use the Gyro function. What do you think Bob?

Steve,

I've set up using both airplane and heli mode on my Corona. No really big difference. In heli mode just make sure the swash is in a normal mode (no CCMP and the aileron/elevator move independently of each other). And make sure Revolution mixing is off or the control points are all set to zeros. And use the Tx's gyro function.

As for heading hold, definitely use HH and not AVCS mode -- especially when learning. (You can use AVCS mode to initially trim the tail, but that's all.)

I would say use the gyro function. Some models use everything below 50% as AVCS mode and above 50% as HH. (On my Tx, negative 0 to 100% is AVCS and positive 0 to 100% is HH.) In any case, try a setting of around 80%. Make sure 401 is not in digital mode and set delay to 50%, limit to 100%.

Also do some searches for "gyro 401 setup programming futaba 7cap." Or e-mail Futaba support.

Even with the 401 you still can get tail wag with a breeze. And you still have to chase down vibrations, slop, boom flex, etc. Do you have a boom support? I know this is frustrating. I spent most of the summer of 2004 getting rid of my tail wag. I think I mention this before, but the best solution was to eliminate vibration (from tail, main shaft and rotor head), boom supports and cutting down and putting a radius on the 120 tail blades.

I also see you have a post at RCG -- I hope someone can answer your problem. But please, don't give up. You'll get this licked.

I read that you mention tailsupport in your lastpost and I am wondering if that is possible to buy somewhere? I have been looking for this for a while but I have not found any support that will fit. Any tips?

The best thing I did to stop the tail wag was:

1) use a CF rod between servo and tail linkage

2) mount the Gyro on a 1/8" foam rubber cushion to dampen vibrations.

I'm still using the Futaba GY240 Gyro and the HS-81 servo....

The 401 and the HS81 have stopped the wag pretty much, but the tail still wanders especially when it's a bit windy/gusty. I think that's to be expected with a heli this size though. I'm also interested in the boom supports. Can you give us some pics of what they look like? (just found this link:

Next is the CF rod...in fact I might go out to the shop right now and do that..problem is the shop is about a million degrees with this hot weather

Great that you posted the link, it is just what I wanted on my Corona. I am not sure which/what materials used in the supports so I still hope I will find some ready made supports that fit.

How do you guys make the CF rod? I have tried to make one but the link seems to loosen up all the time. I have used a serious amount of CA glue on the inside/outside but it will not hold over time. Any tips?

Hi all ...

I used the brass tubing in the beginning, but they bent too easily.

Now I get .196" OD x .121" ID x 48" hollow CF tube from Aerospace Composite Products (http://www.acp-composites.com/). A DuBro 4-40 threaded rod fits in the tube with some medium CA. (You can also get the black rubberized CA.) Let the CA cure for a few hours, or better, overnight. When cured wrap the ends with regular thread and give a coat of CA. The thread and CA is for strength. This way the ends don't splinter. I now use heat shrink tubing on the ends, just as good. Then put on the 4-40 links. Someone had a nice tutorial around here, or at RCG, but I can't find it.

Iceman3 ... maybe a thicker CA, rubberized CA, or wrap something around threaded rod to make it more snug in the tube? I've see ready-made supports, but mainly for T-rex and Zoom. Do a Google search for "CF heli boom support."

Tail Wagg

Hi, I have ben flying a heavely modified (BT) Corona for quite some time now and have seen it all. First thing, no play or binding in linkage. next do not use the open frame after market tail fin. use a solid fin, I make my own. And start out at about 50% on gyro. Lastley with every one of Matt's upgrades my Heli got better.

Many of us have had the "WAG"! I got rid of it by taking out my brand new CSM gyro and dropped in a USED GY-240 and that was the end of my problem. Read thru the the posting from a past thread below. Get rid of the GY-401.....drop down to a GY-240.
