On my lunch breaks, I fly at an open field near a harbor. Every now and then the harbor master complains but some of the key people that fly there are cops. One day, a cop rolled up and wanted some info on a first heli and the harbor master came by to gloat. He asked the cop if he was there to kick us off. The said NO, I'm here to get more info so I can join in on the fun. (priceless) Now he comes out to watch us regularly. It helps to convert cops to the hobby!

Hey Bryguy17, sure would like to know where you field is in SLO. We visit there a couple of times per year, been using the college soccer field when nobody's there, not really ideal. And, are they friendly to visitors?

Hi All

Just picked up on this post and, apart from some replies, it makes for interesting reading.

I've been flying RC for approx 14 years and got into heli's in 2004. I was living in southern Afica and heli's were few and fair between, primarily due to the cost. I moved to the UK in 2002 and approached the local clubs in the SE of the country. Most of them were keen for me to join until I mentioned I wanted to do helicopters. Then the attitude towards me changed and I was told I'd have to go on the waiting list because there were, suddenly, no vacancies. I learnt very quickly to mention I flew FW and, if accepted, wait a few months before suggesting I wanted to do heli's. I was lucky in that one club had a heli pilot as one of its founders, but most of the others weren't so accomodating.

Since I started flying helicopters, there have been more members in the two clubs I belong to start as well. However, we still get the odd comment about "bl**dy helicopters". Unfortunately, and this is not a dig at the older generation by any means, these comments have been from the more established members of the club. Including one from our chairman who referred to helicopters as flying "egg beaters" and did not want them at our concours night.

The strange thing is, I think because helicopters require more maintenance than FW, we, as heli pilots, are a lot safer and more conscious of how we.

ANT, Glad you seem to be keeping a chin up i also think that as you fly both that you are a better pilot because you do fly helis.seems like some fw pilots forget about the rudder,
Tom

A positive outlook is all that is required

Thanks. For a long time I didn't go to one club because I was the only heli pilot. Then a few other members got into heli's and it got better, but we're still outnumbered by the FW guys.

Yes, flying both does help. I flew a lot of pattern aerobatics which required constant attention to the rudder and this benefitted the heli flying.

Just responding to the posts about the MARCS field in Madison, WI.

I've been a member there for about three years and I almost exclusively fly helicopters. I've never been hassled beyond the usual all in good fun jokes about my helicopter. Most of the older plank flyers have commented on how smoothly I operate it, (probably expecting the worst right?)

I'm not really a 3D flyer, I just like to buzz around fast (or slow), the occasional loop or roll if my stupid OS CSPEC isn't acting up.
But I digress...

One of the articles in a recent newsletter featured some commentary from a disgruntled new member about how unfriendly some people were when he asked for help learning to fly his first airplane, so issues with attitudes here extend beyond just animosity toward helicopters and helicopter pilots.

The club officers are aware of it and the president assures me there is no intentional ill will toward any kind of flying. As long as it's safe and the pilot is flying according to his skill set. If anyone flys anything unsafely they will find themselves with few friends. Plain common sense, and you need more of it if you're gonna fly a helicopter.

I think that's the main thing and with helicopters we have to go that extra mile to prove to our fixed wing friends that they can be flown safely.

Good reason to start an all-heli airfield. NO PLANKERS ALLOWED. See how they like it. Most of the time, they are just jealous they dont have the ability or pocket book (or both) to fly helis.

My experiece with Fixed wing pilots almost caused me to quit the hobby. Thank goodness I ran into some people that have good sense and manners. My experience has been hit or miss. Most Fixed wing pilots that don't/can't/neverhave..etc flown choppers seem to be aggressively hostile towards anyone who does/can/does fly. I'm not sure if it's an envy thing or just ignorant pride.

I have run into a few fixed wing pilots that don't/neverhave that have been awesum people and weren't jerks. I wanted to point that out as well.

Generally my gut tells me most folks are pretty nice and it's the odd duck that you notice because he's the one squawking. What these quackers don't realize is the Helicoptor boom we're experience could be the savior of the RC hobby or the last hurrah. If these folks are successful at running new folks off and/or spoiling things with local land owners so chopper pilots aren't able to get fields then ultimately the hobby suffers.

Time will tell if this is a permanent boom or just a last hurrah. We have an opportunity to preserve our hobby through the next generations. Will we take the opportunity or just squawk and run folks off?

I've already lost one field from bad feelings squawkers caused towards choppers. We never even flew but there were anecdotal stories about noise problems from "guys flying loud airplanes".

Starting a club is hard, getting a field is next to impossible. We'll see how things work out. My plan is to get a field and start immediately to get experienced pilots committed to working with kids grps to teach flying.

We must build our future if we expect to enjoy it.

Ive been flying for over 40 years planes then got into helis. There are about 3 of us that fly both planes and helis in the club and the biggest majority of our club enjoy watching us fly them and really love to look at the mechanics of them and ask questions. My wife is a part time flyer of helis she is still learning and she flys planes all the time infact better then a lot of the older crowd can fly. Mind you I am 53 years old to some of you here I would be the older crowd. Well women were not welcome well at firs in our club when we first joined it now we have 5 female members it was the 70+ crowd that complained at first saying we come out here to get away from our wives. My wife one day fired back well maybe they wouldnt be on you so much if you treated them like humans. Well that went over well lol. Now a couple of years ago these same idiots best word for them decided that femal members cant be involved in pilots raffles etc got it passed at the meeting next month it was changed back due to threats of discrimination not by the female members either by a male member. My wife refuses to go to meetings anymore and used to do all the cooking in the club for events was always there for helping out now she wont lift a finger and I dont blame her. Now this year we have picked up 5 new members the oldest being mid 30s they are siding with the plane only idiots that have issues with the helis (mind you these older guys dont fly anymore either) and are fighting to get the helies removed from the club. Well long story short. They are losing 17 members at the end of the year and unbeknowst to them they will lose thier field too since the property owner of the field flys helis. Club politics and a couple of people can ruin a club. I myself like a club enviroment if people act like people not idiots and welcome all female pilots to get involved and wish more females would fly. Hey Pyrock I agree with you on EBRC too I wont go back there again once in a while I go to SBRC but only once in a while. The biggest problem I see in this thread here is helis and thier pilots or discriminated agasint all the time at most fields so we all need to stand toghter be either a outlaw or a club flyer and this insulting and calling each other names here is rahter inmature and childish. We as heli people male and female should work toghter to educate then anti heli people.

I go to EBRC once in a while just to talk to my old buddies but It's uncomfortable to fly while there's a negative buzz behind me in the pitt area. I know that I could easily ignore them and just focus on my flying but to me, flying RC should be a full experience...flying, good conversation, supporting other enthusiasts (helis or planks), and good old fashion fun. Why pay $$ to be a member when you dont feel welcome 100% of the time? I see most of those same buddies at an empty lot not too far away anyway so the "club" thing isn't totally necessary. Who knows, it may change as I hear it is getting more and more heli-friently every weekend. I'll keep an eye on it.
