Women Pilots > Has anyone gotten hassled at the field?

Hi all,

Curious if anyone has gotten the cold shoulder at the flying field?

I have always been extremely welcome on any field I have walked onto. Perhaps I've been blessed but I've been the center of attention on occasion, ignored on occasion, but it's always been acceptance.

Usually I get 5 to 10 guys come over and talk. They have always been curious and wicked helpful, kinda like this forum. I have made some really close friends through flying, it's a good thing

I have had some senior citizen plankers come and give all of us heli pilots a hard time, I think they were making up club rules as they went.

Cheers,
Leslie

Leslie...I've experienced that before and I think it just comes with the territory. I'm surprised they haven't asked you to fly in a 10x10 square.LOL. But seriously, most plankers guys (especially the older ones) have a fear of heli's. Keep flying and I hope this Category will have much success.

How high do they go? Are those things hard too fly? How much do they cost?

A FAT complacent man almost hit me at our field.I brought up the sore subject of non flyers making all the rules in our club. The FAT complacent man wanted to attack me.He is over 70 years old and I would not had hit him back for fear of hurting him too much etc...

at a predominantly airplane flying club, you will get hassled by the older gents if you show up with a heli no mater if you are a male ofr female. i have had my share of evil looks when i pull the heli out amongst the aged fixed wing pilots. no worries though, an ounce of niceness will neutralize a pound of unfriendliness.

I got a good bumper sticker for the hasslers:

I was flying at a feild once and had someone step into my line of sight to tell me that they were switching runways because of the change in the wind direction and that I had to land, shut my heli down and wait for them to switch then I could go up again on the inactive runway. I almost crashed. I never flew there again. Now I live in MN and haven't had much of a problem, most of them are amazed just to see a heli fly.... especially in my area.

I found that Helis are becoming more popular now, especialy with t-rex. My field used to make up rules as they went, but now the rules are changing because most of the older rule makers are actually trying to fly a heli now. So now instead of "the look" and banished to the back paddock, I have a million questions and setup checks to do. lol

Then they all watch me fly the Gasser. And love the power of the beast.

So it should get better

Just showing up at a field with a heli can get you into the doghouse.
I've heard things like:
We don't fly those things here
You can only fly that thing from 11:00 am to 11:30 am
Guests can't fly those things without a field controller present
It can really make a person feel unwelcome.

BULL CR*P.. I'm older (67) and I fly planks and helis and welcome anyone, including gliders. I have helped 8 yr olds to 70 yr olds. You must be showing up with an attitude, it shows in your post. You probably walk in and act like you own the place....

I have to admit that even if your not welcome with your heli you almost always are with a plane. So take the plane out first fly it then introduce the heli. And even though you may not be welcome with the heli it will usully draw some attention and someone will want to see it fly and or crash.

wow!, i made someone upset. that was unintentional and cannot be good.
Nextstepheli, i appreciate your speaking up at what appeared to be a very arrogant statement.
okay, what i should have pointed out was that in my experience, i mostly get the hassles from older gents at some of the clubs i have visited when i show up with helicopters. it was unfair for me to give the impression that i spoke of all senior members in clubs because that is simply not true. i offer my appologies.
i have to say however, that i do like Rcer22's idea of using an airplane as a buffer whenever i visit a new field, if there isnt any evidence of heli flying, i always ask if it is okay to fly one there, and where. i know all clubs have rules and so i ask just to be sure i dont break any, or make anyone upset.

sorry but I have to butt in here:

nextstepheli: If you ever meet Copterdoctor you will find he is one of the nicest guys you can meet in this hobby. As you can see, he has corrected his statement a bit to clear up any misunderstanding.
He has taught me quite a bit, to include how to be a better person.

that said, I can tell you that I have experienced the same thing when I show up at a plank field. I do as Emile says, aprroach in a friendly manner and introduce myself, and ask permission to fly. I had ALWAYS initally gotten the cold shoulder in spite of that.
However, there was always at least one "older gentleman" ( BTW,I AM 54) who would eventually come over and conversate. It took a while but eventually I was tolerated.
They even converted me as I now love and fly planes also.

I continue to follow Emile's rule of continue treating them with kindness and it will eventually win them over.

Old and Cranky apparently (just kidding bro) Keep helping the new ones, I am glad to hear of your service to the hobby. And Copter Doctor is top class, so dont take his post personal.

You have to admit that it is "usually" the older plane ONLY gentlemen that hassle the young and heli-people, we see it all the time. I am glad you dont do that, we need more guys like you.

I've been to a field and I wont mention any names where some of the folks were so unfriendly I didn't want to fly there. And they didn't want you to anyway. The sick thing about it is the people that don't want you to fly don't fly themselves. To them the club is a social thing. Some of there own members don't care for them and their attitudes.

heh, thats funny, i got one of those clubs here too. rather than encourage, they discourage new people.
in keeping with the porpose of this section, i hope many more women will get involved regardless of the stumbling blocks they are likely to face and not be discouraged. thank goodness there are more helpful people out there than unfriendlies.

I hope you are not refering to a certain club that I am familiar with, one of the few clubs in our area (yours and mine). Of the two clubs I that belong to, guys with helis (including myself )are more than welcome. What is unacceptable are those that refuse to obey the rules, both AMA's and those of the club, and placing others in harms way. For example-no flying over the pit area. Or even worse-starting their machine in the parking area, flying across said area, over the spectator fence AND the pit fence and then on to the field. Also, refusing to stand behind the pilot station baricades. Rudeness is also a "turnoff". Jumping in out of turn, especially when someone has a model running and ready to be taken to the flying area, who then has to shut down because someone started ther heli, rushed out to the field and is now flying in close so no one can safley taxi in or out, take off or land. If this sounds specific, it is. I believe most clubs have a rule that you may fly a limited number of times as a guest before membership is required, and yes, a club member has to be present if this guest wishes to fly. We also require a "spotter" to be with the pilot at the pilot station.
I apologize to all otherts for my "soapbox" attitude here, but when I see such nonsense from a fellow flyer,it just gets to me. And as far as I know, you were never harrased, just asked to cooperate with AMA and club field rules.
I don't post very often (3 times in 3 years), but when someone makes a comment about one of the clubs I belong to and the folks that I fly with and I know the "rest of the story", I just have to say something. Sorry if this offends you, but I felt rather offended myself.
