e-Lite Machines Corona > Ditching the darn Astro 020!

Hi all,

After the ..nth mail to astroflight because they use some form of caveman english, Im getting perty sick of the bad service and this astro 020 turning the inside of my corona into an easybake oven.. I swear, shove a glob of dough in it and it farts muffins when you set her down.

From what ive been able to translate, the motor is allowed to run 73'c/165'F at most.

After a couple tests with a proper IR thermometer, these are the results.

# Ambient 16'c/60'F - Battery 7x NiMH 2400 - AUW 1390gr/49oz. #
After 5 minutes of flying, the outside of the motor was reading 64'c/147'F. Power was rather sluggish, motor is supposed to run 8 cells.

# Ambient 16'c/60'F - Battery 8x NiMH 2400 - AUW 1454/51.3oz. #
After 5 minutes of flying, the outside of the motor was reading 66'c/150'F. Power was ok as expected, but motor is running real close to max temp.

So you see, after 5 minutes in fairly cold weather the motor is only 7'c/15'F away from crossing the safe zone. This will not do when summer hits with ambient temps of over 23'c/73'F, because then it crosses the threshold for sure.

So heres the new setup I had in mind:
Motor: Feigao 380-84 17 S.
Esc: Schulze Future 18.46K
Battery: 3s2p ELE-Models 4400mAh (total) 10C lipo.
Pinion: 10T
Bladegrips: 3-dot

People say this motor is the cheap equivalent of the Hacker C40-12T.

This will make the bird lose a little bit of weight (around 30gr/1oz), and ive already seen 2 germans being happy with it. Plus the giant lipo it can carry, will probably stand for an awesome flight time of atleast 15 minutes.

What do you guys think? Opinions and experiences are highly apreciated.

Hi Freakazoid,

If you are quick you can get a second hand C40-12T over here for $99.

Second hand C40

I'd buy it but I can't seem to get my hands on a second hand Corona .

Regards,
Griffo.

I'd go with the Mega 16 I've had the Feigao wasn't impressed with the power....

@Griffo: I dont do 2nd hand motors. Burnt myself on those one tomany times.

@Orion: Ive seen people struggle with the 16/15/3 in hot weather, let alone flying with a scale body on it. So im not sure this is the right one.

How about this motor then?
HT LRK 350/12 10W 10P
Datasheet

Its supposed to give you 25 to 30 minutes of flight time on a 5000mAh pack it can apparently carry, along with a scale jetranger body aswell.

dont know about that one never tried it nor have I heard any flight reports on it. I think any motor is gonna get hot during the summer time especially if your running a scale body on it. YOu can get a heatsink for the mega and I've seen people run those small computer fans right up against their motors for extra cooling. Very light and they use VERY little power. Something to consider maybe.

What, you mean like this?

Didnt even change my astro temp 1'. So I wonder if it would do anything on a mega eighter.

Did you notice this LRK motor has a built in venting system? Its an outrunner, wich has a little fan ontop of the bell. When the bell starts revving, the fanblades are obviously going to suck some air through the spools. Maybe that helps a heaping lot, since all other motors out here are usually of the sealed up type where the temperature inside is couped up?

try helihobby.com they sell a axi outrunner for around $120us that would help as the motor doesnt have to work so hard to make the torq as a inrunner and with a fixed pitch machine as the corona is that will help a lot also u could try a larger pinon gear as the kv on the astro is quite high and u really dont need the high head speed on that bird and the larger pinion would decrese the spool up time if you get in trouble

Astroflight told me to INcrease the RPM. They say its happier with high RPM because then it ll have a higher efficiency and thus less wattage turning into heat.

Ive found out the astro hates long hovers. :P When doing a little cruizing, the astro gets alot less hot.

In that case you must lower the bladegrips a dot down.
