Bergen R/C Helicopters > Acceptable Main Gear backlash

Hi All,

With regards to the build of my Intrepid Gasser EB, I've been having my challenges setting the clutch pinion to main gear.

There seems to be a 20 degree area of the main gear that provides a little drag while there is backlash around the other 340 degrees. If I back off the eng/clutch/pinion assy enough to relieve the area of drag then I find there is too much(IMHO) backlash around the other side of the main gear.

I've removed main gear twice and there doesn't seem to be any warp. I didn't over torque the main gear to auto hub and did snug evenly.

I'm positive it has nothing to do with T/R pinion. I've removed it to find situation still exists.

Only thing I can find is that in the area of drag, the main gear spline or tooth height is aprox .010" longer in height.

I've re-checked vertical alignment of Eng/pinion assy and am confident it is good. Had to file out a couple mount screw holes in the side frames.

Am I being too picky? Would it be a good idea to go with the minimal bit of drag and check/adjust engine/clutch pinion alignment after 1st run? or...

Back off eng assy til there is definatel NIL drag. In that case what is an acceptable am't of backlash where I don't have to worry about the main gear being eaten up?

Any input would be appreciated.

Hopefully Chris will chime in on this one.

When assembling mine, I had the opposite. Small area with tightness. I had read a post by Chris that indicated the gear would wear-in. It did in short order and is very smooth now.
With that much drag, I would want Chris' opinion on that one.

Drag

My amount of drag really isn't that much. I can't see the engine having troubles or even noticing it. Just not sure though.

The amount of resistance I had initially was rather noticable. Just a bit of concern for me but it did go away after the first run up.
You are setting the gear lash according to the manual, right?

As per

Yep everything as per the manual. As well as a couple PM's to/from Chris regarding vertical alignment. I ended up filing out a couple of screw mount holes to allow enough movement and still allow the eng/clutch/pinion assy stay vertical.

Hi Tom,

I figured everyone would be out flying. Can't blame anyone for not responding as soon as they usually do. It is the season! Well not in Calgary. Rain and cool

I'm in Calgary.

Set the gear mesh so there is slight drag on the high spot. You should be fine there.
