e-Lite Machines Corona > Battery placement on aluminum crutch

I'm about to start rebuilding today using a new Alum crutch kit. I also have the JR skids with the battery mount on the bottom.

Question: Should I use the skid battery mount (battery under the main gear) or use the side battery mount clips that came with the alum crutch?

I'm using the Tensor 3500mah NIMH batteries.

Steve,

With my wood crutch I preferred the stock, side-mounted position as opposed to the JR underslung. With side-mounted NIMHs the Corona is a little more nimble, but you quickly get use to it. I don't like the pendulum feel, or low center of gravity, of underslung batts. I guess it is a personal preference, but give side-mounted a try.

I've done both with that same pack (8 cell...correct?) and the aluminum crutch. The problem I had was getting the C/G correct with the battery mounted on the side. The 8 cell pack made the bird way to nose heavy. The battery was pushed back against one of the cyclic servos and could go no further. Even after moving my tail servo back to the back of the boom it was still nose heavy. During a nose in crash the battery actually broke the servo mounting arms when it was pushed back. I now fly it with the battery in the JR battery mount. With the C/G correct the Heli flies great now. I agree with Bob the pendulum effect feels very different from the more responsive side mounted battery. As a beginner I sort of like it a little better and it seemed to lessen the nose up effect when coming out of FFF. If you can get it C/G correct with the battery on the side go for it, if not the under mount is fine. Basically the Heli will fly great either way as long as the C/G is spot on.

Regards,
Sonny

I did something similar to what Sonny did. I added spacers to the first servo so that the back end of the batteries would clear the servo. With 8-cell 3300GP I was able to slide the batteries around and get a good CG. I now have a Crooked crutch, but there is no way to mount 8-cells on the side without moving motor and servos. I could get two small packs of 2100 lipos on each side of the nose plate, but for the time being it looks like I'm stuck with underslung mount. The new BT Freestyle body has room for lipo battery mounted between the two side CF frames t top. I just which liops were a tad smaller in some mesurements. -Bob-

I think for now I'll use the bottom clips on the JR gear and see how it goes. I'm wondering how they will fare in an accelerated landing ;-). You would think the weight of the batteries would tear the clips out.

It would be nice to have that extra room on the crutch for a stiffener bar instead of using that space for a battery.

JR gear clips are real stong. With a bad crash the batteries will slip out helping to lessen damage.

Good to know compubob. thanks

Now if only the freakin' rain would stop...

Just have to put a new body together and trim it out, and I'll be all set.

I didn’t like the way the JR Clips held the battery. It was difficult to get a good CG. The pack needed to be far enough forward that I couldn’t even connect the rear clip. So, I cut the clips off (leaving a little piece at the base,) and made a plywood plate to span between the gear. I used the left over bulge from the cut off clips to fit into holes in the plywood plate to maintain good plate position. Then I use Velcro tape/ straps to hold the battery in place at the proper CG. It works well for me.

Hi all

I wondered to buy a Chopper1 Sport landing gear for my Corona because the stock landing gear gets somewhat bent and I have difficulties to fit the battery pack to balance the heli on the aluminum crutch (7cell 2600Mah). I have now moved it all the way back as far as it goes but it is not enough. It is still noseheavy and wants to move forward when hovering. The swashplate is pretty much adjusted backwards to get it to balance in flight. Have anyone tried this landing gear?

LG choices. I recenlty put the JR gear on and had no probs with CG and battery location. i would think if you had your servo tail mounted or had your gyro behind the rotor then you would have to move the battery forward.

First hard landing (or was it a crash?) one of the battery clips broke off. I now hold the battery on with a reusable wire tie.

I would think the Chopper1 LG would be the most durable thing out there. that Delrin plastic is really tough stuff.

Yes I think that the Chopper1 LG looks to be very strong, but I have not read about anyone using them. The battery fastening system also looks much better than stock if I would go for a 8cell pack later on even if it is under the belly and not on the crutch. Since I am a beginner in the helihobby this also might add some stability. What do you think of yours JR gear?

the JR LG is pretty decent and quite sturdy. I'm just learning, so I'm still hard on the heli.
